Hi Ralph,
You might look at Wallace Wade and Coker Tire. Both are on the web. I found Coker to be one of the most competitive with pricing, but Wallace Wade tends to throw in flaps and tubes either free or on the cheap if you get 4 tires.
Also, Front Line Military Vehicles has new tubes at affordable prices too, so don't feel like you have to get it all from one place if you don't want to.

I mounted those new Firestones from Universal last spring and never used flaps... weren't recommended... just the tubes with some baby powder on them (this is important). The Firestones were kind of expensive though, because they had just come out. Maybe the price has dropped on them, but Wallace Wade still had the cheapest prices last spring (probably still does) on their own brand. We ran a whole thread on tires and pricing... still out there I'm sure.
I'll tell you what though... I never realized how hard my jeep rode until I replaced the long-overdue set of sneakers... thought it was due to the suspension and, well, it IS a jeep after all. Man, what a difference, and I kid you not. Even my wife could tell a big difference in the way it takes the bumps in the road. Those old D-rated tires will never blow out and that's half the trouble... they last forever. No telling how old my set was, but the rubber had dried out and was hard as a rock and bald as can be. Never knew how bad those things rode 'till I put on the new set. She rides like a freakin' Cadillac now. Well.... almost

Bob, have you ever noticed the softer ride of an A-1 compared to A-2? I have surplus cooper's on an A-1 and it rides great ,however noise is a diffrent subject....HTN....

I drove an A1 for all of about a 1/4 mile up at the Weare, NH Meet in 2003. Before that, I rode exclusively in A1s in 'Nam in '69, but that was so few and far between and so long ago that I can't count that either.
So no, I can't compare the two. But my A2 rides pretty good. Real good, in fact, especially with the new tires. And I don't think I'd trade it for the A1 still, only because I really don't like the cant on the rear tires on the A1 and the propensity or pre-loaded proclivity for collapse to the underside after becoming airborne or taking a sharp turn, which, in my humble estimation, is the main reason why the entire line of these great jeeps ever came under fire in the first place. But that's just me I suppose.
Truth be known, the purist in me wants to pick up a solid, uncut A1 and really do it over right... I mean, make it a real historic showpiece... everything just the way it was in 'Nam, right down to the last nut and bolt. The other half of me likes to drive his grandson around on the beach roads (he's coming in a couple of weeks) and take it out myself on the interstate to Aberdeen in the spring. And that's still the half that tells me I'm better off with my A2 suspension, even though it's still not the "perfect" Vietnam-era jeep. The trade-off for me is, the A2 is still "close enough for government work" in terms of having fun and driving it in parades.

I went with the M151A2 because safety was a major concern. I agree with Bob that the A1 suspension is something to consider. However let's be clear... once I got my A2 I then removed the ROPS Kit because I thought it made my Mutt look like it was a moving platform for a jungle gym. I went from shoulder belts to lap belts and scrapped the safety netting. Go figure I say if you jones on the A1's then have at them. Whether we're talking M151s, A1s, or A2s I think we'd all agree that we're splitting hairs over safety. In a serious collision Mutts are not safe period. No amount of Gamma Goat lighting, NATO reflectors, or A2 suspension will counterbalance that Mutts are 1/4 ton vehicles operating on roadways with much larger vehicles. Do Mutts have crumple zones?

The flap your inquiring about is only used to keep the tub from being pinched when mounting or penitrated while driving..
The inner flap is used on spoke, split ring and split rims.
Also while on this subject about tires and here is my conclusion!. I have no idea why MV owners want to go with civilian type tires. Most of them are 4 ply that needs at least 32psi. These MUTTS are designed to run on 6 ply @ 20 - 25 psi. If you run other than MV type tires and the correct PSI your asking for trouble and if not now, just maybe down the road when you have a blow out.
In closing, keep these MUTTs as close to original specs as much as possible on the suspension side. Remember that there is no Camber/Castor + / - only Toe in & out.
