M151A2 Fuel Tank Removal and Top Rack Stowage

Post by glcaines » Tue Jan 10, 2023 3:30 pm

I'm having to remove the fuel tank on my recently acquired M151A2. I don't see how I can remove it without removing the ROPS, or at least the middle ROPS mount behind the fuel tank. If it wasn't for the ROPS, it would be a simple matter. Also, I have removed the tarp and folded the rack down. With the ROPS, there is no way to store the rack without it sitting on top of the spare wheel mount and butting up against the ROPS rear supports. The front of the top rack stick up in the air instead of the whole rack laying flat on the fenders. Is this correct?
I drove an M151A1 back in 1970-71, but there was not any ROPS on 1/4 tons at that time, even on A2 vehicles, so I'm learning. The A2 I have was a TOW vehicle. I'm amazed at how many holes are present in the sheet metal. I'm not sure if I want to fill them in or insert bolts in them to hide them.

Top bows won't lay flat with ROPS, I don't own a jeep with ROPS but I think you can take the bolts out of center support and wedge it up a little.

After spending a significant number of hours trying to remove the ROPS system I've decided to trash the ROPS. Removing that foam is the pits.
Tomorrow, the Milwaukee Sawzall comes out! I hate the ROPS anyway. I'm not sure if I will save the pieces. I guess I could build a large fire and burn the foam off and then have the pieces of tubing sandblasted and weld the cut pieces back together. I'll never use the ROPS again but if I sell the M151A2 in the future, the new owner might want it. I'm going to leave all of the bolted-on pieces in place. Once the ROPS is gone, I will be able to remove and clean the fuel tank. I will also be able to leave the top rack in place folded down. I've temporarily removed the top rack.

They were supposed to cut out metal on edge of tank where the foot rested but obviously didnt.
Thought they were the ugliest thing that I had on two A2s
After all the holes were closed it was the way it should look.
