M151A2 TOW S/N and Contract Number

Post by glcaines » Sun Jan 08, 2023 4:06 pm

I have purchased an M151A2 that is missing the original data plate. Therefore, I don't have the S/N to register the truck. However, the 1/4 ton does have a placard affixed under the steering column indicating that it is a TOW vehicle. The data on this placard shows a S/N of 004557 and a date of
08/79. Does anyone know if this S/N is the same as the vehicle S/N? What about the date? If this is the vehicle S/N, does anyone have a similar S/N and date for an A2 that can provide the contract number? I have an original blank A2 data plate that I can fill in if I have the correct information.
EDIT
I have found evidence that the S/N on the TOW data plate is the same as the vehicle S/N. Now all I need is the AM General contract number for 1979.

I don't know whether you know it or not but the M151 never had a serial number from the factory. This has been a problem for people getting titles ever since they had M-151's since the M151 was never supped to be in civilian hands. BUT, They did get out and people have them Mine actually came with an SF-97 to the originally owner. The serial number is the number that is assigned to the vehicle on the data plate. That will also be the number painted on the hood, or in your case on the dashboard or under the hood. The number you are giving is not the correct number since the correct number is an alphanumeric sequence. If you still have the body tag on the transmission tunnel about where your right ankle would be when driving get the information off of that and once Ken the Muttguru gets back in action he can get you a contract number and a close estimate on serial numbers. Ken is still in bed rest after a heart attack so it might be a little bit before he is back.

Thanks. That is the site I found last night. I found my serial number listed, along with the hood number, which matched. There were so many numbers on that site it took me quite a while to find it. I think I'm making progress. Now all I need is the contract number.
