bench testing a fuel pump

Post by Gary Turman » Thu Nov 10, 2022 8:05 am

I tried to bench test my electric fuel pump and got nothing. It was working fine when I took it out and switched to a mechanical pump. I took a 24 volt source from my b/o light, tested it to make sure I was getting voltage. I put a lead to it's plug from the 24 volt source and grounded it off the body and got nothing. Am I doing it correctly? I wanted to take a short video of it working then sell it.

I would use a voltage source and ground from a little more reliable source. Like directly from the batteries or the slave connection. That way you know that part of the equation is good. That fuel pump is drawing a lot of amps through a light switch the way you are doing it. We are talking about a factory 151 electric pump right? They can dry out and get stuck inside, spray some WD-40 in all the openings and with power to it tap it on both ends to see if it will pop loose. If not you may have to disassemble it. I would try the spray first or even soak it in diesel fuel or two stroke gas to get some lube into it and then try running it, If you have a bucket of diesel fuel you could even try running it under the fuel. You could try gas but if you do be sure the wires are hooked up solidly first. You don't want sparks around open containers of gas, diesel will not light.
