Nephew is working on an early M151 and sent me a picture of his transmission and bell housing.
I have a couple of M151s but neither one has this gadget on top. I believe mine are just plated over.
Right above where the starter attaches.
got another picture
Whats on top of bell housing?

I'm guessing early anti theft device. Won't let starter engage.

That is a manual linkage to kick out the starter to the flywheel in extreme cold artic weather. REALLY rare to have one complete!! Most just have a plate over the hole.

Thanks RickF
It is an Alaskan Mutt so that makes sense. Will try to find out how it was hooked up.

There was a control on the dash that would allow for manual engagement of Bendix in cold weather.
Finally eliminated because of too many manual engagements while jeep was being operated.

Thanks for that information Fil
I checked on my as yet restored M151 out back and it too has that gadget on it. Both M151s were found in Fairbanks AK so definitely cold weather vehicles.
