1961 Army generator

Post by lester4238 » Tue May 24, 2022 6:41 pm

Hello,
I was at the local scrap yard today and saw an Army 12KW generator someone turned in for scrap. I noticed the engine is a 4 cylinder and was wondering what was the motor that was in the M151. It has been to long for me to remember them. Did they put M151 motors in other equipment like they did the M35?

I finally found a picture of a M151 engine. Nope, the generator had different engine, it was a flat head engine. Darn, I was hoping to save a M151 engine.

C2? Not familiar with that nomenclature. Was a C2 a military engine?

That should be CJ-2 Jeep engine. The civilian version of the military Jeep from WWII. Still a worthy engine to save depending on the condition of it and the price.

So, the military generator had a cj-2 civilian in it? This has a 24V system, Magneto and regulator.

No, it is just the same engine with a military ignition system. It was used in the military Jeeps first, I don't think the CJ-2 came out until after the war.

The engine is also a flat top, with an updraft carburetor.

The correct carburetor for a Willys Jeep engine from 1943 would be a Carter WO 539 downdraft. !950's M38 and M38A1 Jeeps used a Carter YS model carburetor, also a down draft. You are saying this is a flat head with an updraft carb, I am wondering if this may be a model A engine. Where is the distributor located? If not them probably a Hercules stationary engine. There should be a data plate somewhere on the frame of the unit to identify what the unit is and from that the guys on the G503 would be able to tell you what you have.

If they have not chopped it when I go back on Wednesday, I will see if the data plate is there. All the other data plates were still on the outside so it would be a good chance the one for the motor is still there.

The data plates on the outside are the ones that will tell you exactly what generator it is and from that info you can find out what engine it is. But if it is that close top the mulcher they aren't going to wait on you unless you know someone there.

Here is the generator section on the 503 here. viewforum.php?f=129 You might find something there. I am going to see if I can find anything on Steel Soldiers.

Here is a thread in the generator section of Steel Soldiers you might find interesting. Maybe contact that person that posted that info on those sets.

Disregard contacting Masher, he was last seen in 2013.
