can you change it from under jeep by removing front driveshaft and yoke?

Yes, I use a seal puller, you can see this one took a little effort.

What about putting lacquer thinner in to swell the seal? If it works, good. If it doesn't what could it hurt?

The bearings and syncros. And it will also ruin the rest of the seals so then you will be replacing them all, which you should do when you do one because if one is bad the rest are close behind. There is no magic potion to make the seals stop leaking, regardless what the marketing tells you.
