Batteries

Post by chevpol » Sun May 08, 2022 10:08 am

Decided to do a experiment on my batteries, charge them up, take voltage readings, then attempt to start the mutt, then take some more.

Battery 1 ( nearest to driver) 12.09v before start 11.9v after.

Battery 2, 12.35v before start, 12.2v after.

Total, 24.04v before, 24.2v after.

One thing I did notice though, after the initial press of the starter, the motor turned over reasonably well, not fast enough in my view, but after a few seconds it went almost as if the batteries had died.

And I can smell petrol around the engine.

Battery #1 is bad. 11.9 volts is a dead battery. what you need to do is buy two new batteries, yes, TWO new batteries. They have to be matched and even from the start or you will be chasing your tail forever. Use the good one you take out for something else and the dead one, use as a core for one of the new ones. I would guess that during cranking your voltage is probably low enough that you may not be getting spark. Electronic ignition needs decent voltage to work correctly. And with a 79 you definitely have electronic unless someone changed it to points.
