Re: No start
Something else I just thought of.
You may have already checked.
If you removed the fuel line from the carburetor and blow into it, can you hear bubbling noise from the fuel tank ?
If so, your fuel pump may need faulty.

A flight draft?
Should suck hard, I think.
Yea, I would say you have a vacuum leak.

OK, will have another attempt tomorrow as it is 2130 here in the UK. The Mutt is a 1979, get a healthy flow from the fuel pump when disconnected.

Re: No start
Ok, so we know the fuel system is good all the way up to the carb. You said before you know the carb is getting gas in it. Putting your hand over the mouth of the carb tight and cranking it should have sucked a LOT of gas into the mouth of the carb, to the point of running out of the intake when you removed your hand. If that did not happen either you have no vacuum or no gas coming through the carb. You say the engine ran before so I find it hard to believe a vacuum leak opened up all by itself unless you loosened the bolts on the intake/exhaust manifold. If you did not do that then let's not consider the vacuum leak angle yet. You say you have had the carb off and apart many times, I think this may be the issue. Put a towel down on the alternator and reach under the carb with a 3/8 box wrench I think it is and take out the drain plug on the bottom of the bowl and see if it drains out about a half cup of gas. If it does then leave the ignition switch off and crank it for a bit with the plug out and see if gas starts coming out the drain pretty quickly after you start cranking. If it does then we now know you have no issues with the float and needle and seat. The problem is going to be in the passage between the main jet and the rest of the carb circuits. Now, there could be a vacuum leak at the carb to intake gasket if you have reused this gasket every time you had it off and apart. You can temporarily get by with some Permatex #3 sealant on the old gasket but you will still need to replace it.

How far are you from London? I have no idea of the geography of England. I know we have some members over there and Ken the Mutt guru lives in London. If you could scrounge up a known good carb to throw on there just to use to see if the carb is the problem that would save a lot of time.

Re: No start
Appreciate the troubleshooting info follow-up.
A trick I sometimes have used on many a MUTT, is to crank the engine with no power to the ignition for a few cranks with the accelerator floored (not pumping), clearing the cylinders of any potential flooding, and while cranking (about the 5th crank) switch on the ignition.
They sometimes just need a little help to get started, they are not modern fuel injected dual overhead cam variable timed engines with computers controlling them.

Re: No start
Yea, and modern cars have 25 to 30 computers on board. I am really glad I got out of wrenching before the worst of that hit. Buying new scanners every 5 years at 10-15 grand each was just becoming a thing at that time. I had already bought two at 2500 and 4500. I was done. Changed careers. My buddy told me his latest Snap on scanner was 22,000 buck but he got a good trade in on his old one so he only had to pay 16,000. People wonder why it costs so much to fix cars nowadays. That is why I have three older diesel pickups, newest one is a 98. Even my 06 Mustang can be a nightmare with two computers.

Re: No start
Carburettor now seem OK, still won't start. After turning over, get the odd bang, then starter motor wirrs (disengaged) start again, a Cople mor bangs, then a pop from the exhaust. I havnt moved the distributor on removed to top to clean the rota, it is electronic ignition.
Would a dodgy coil cause what I think is intermittent spark?

Re: No start
Question...
Did you removed the spark plug at all?
And if so, did you label them with masking tape and a sharpie??? Like 1, 2, 3, 4 ??

Re: No start
When I changed the plugs I only changed 1 at a time, so no way of cross wiring plugs. I didn't remove the leads when I took the distributor top off, straight lift up and back.
