Electrical issues

Post by chevpol » Fri Apr 15, 2022 3:41 am

Bought an A2 last week, Drove home OK but discovered a oil leak from the side of the engine plate, easy fix. However, after I got it home, vit wouldn't start, changed the batteries, the plugs etc, still no joy!

Pulled the ignition switch and found a cable with some of the wiring exposed.

What do I do now?

That's probably not your problem, harness is old and deteriorating, you can tape that up. First thing to check is to make sure you have fire at the spark plugs and fuel at the carburetor.

As Hambone said that will not be your immediate issue but it will be an issue down the road. These vehicles were well known for the wiring harnesses turning to dust. Your best bet is to source a new front and rear harness for it while they are still available and reasonably cheap. An A1 harness is above 1500.00 the last time I looked and only available from one aftermarket place. The A2 harnesses are still available NOS from most surplus vendors.

Be sure to go over the rest of your wiring because if the one is degrading the rest will be also, under the hood always seems to go first.

Replacing the harness makes a lot of sense
But finding what is wrong would be good.
Is it an ignition problem or what ?
Throwing a harness on and still having a problem would be disheartening.
Just some thoughts from the old man.
