propeller shaft

Post by ldj1002 » Sun Apr 03, 2022 8:40 am

I have manual TM 9-2320-218-34 and I can't find info on the propeller shaft. How do I get it apart?. That is the manual that gave the wrong float setting. Anything else wrong in that manual?

By propeller shaft are you talking about the axle shaft? That is the only one that comes apart. You unscrew the large ring where the outer meets the inner shaft and pull that ring back and then pull the axle apart. Pay attention to the orientation of the yokes before pulling at apart.

Are you talking about replacing u joints or separating the axle shaft? On the axle shaft, unscrew joint cap and they pull out, they can be tough to get apart when dealing with old grease and grime or rust.

Yes axle shaft. I have loosened the ring and slid it back. The axle slides back some but it seems to hit a solid spot. How about that seal behind the ring. Looks like could use rope or some kind packing for that and the ring would tighten it down for seal. Want to make sure it goes in all the way to make easy to put axle back in.

What you are running into is solidified grease. There is a seal but it is not all that big, no packing. Once you finally get it apart you need to get it all cleaned up and then put it together dry and make sure there is not excessive play in the splines. If not pull it apart and put some grease on the splines and put it back together and grease it through the fitting. Make absolutely sure the relief valve on the end of the axle is cleaned out. This is where any excess grease will come out and if it is clogged the axle will jam into the wheel bearings and spider gears. Not a good scenario.

Wow, I saw that relief valve on the end but I didn't have any idea it is a relief valve. I wonder why this info. isn't in the manual? How much grease to pump in?

I usually just put in two or three pumps. Unless you are using this full time off road or underwater that is plenty. The relief valve is for when too much grease is put it, it has to go somewhere or something will break.

I pulled 1 apart and you said pay attention to orientation of yoke. What do you mean? It won't go back but one way IE you can't change orientation.

So the splines are keyed, I could not remember if they were or if it was even splines all the way around. On any drive shaft you always need to be sure you get the ends back on in the same position they came off or you will have bad vibration. Some splines have a dead spline so they will only go together one way and this makes it easy.
