Normal, If you did not have that gap you would not have enough slip in the yoke for it to slide back to get the drive shaft out. As it is you will find out it is snug. Think of it this way, You have to be able to slide that yoke back half the thickness of a u-joint cap to be able to wiggle that shaft out. You have to clear the u-joint.

Yes, I understand that.
But that yoke does not ride on the splines far enough to keep the driveline from flopping around.
Now on the first 151 I rebuilt back in the 80s, the body was cut in half and I had a custom driveline made. There was just enough clearance for me to remove the driveline, but only if the driveline was at an angle. Then it dropped out.

So something wrong here.

So question???
If you look under YOUR 151, and where the driveline connects to the transmission, can you move the driveline up, down, left and right without rotating the drive line??

Like to know

I can if the yoke is worn, which is fairly common. You say you could remove the driveline only if it was at an angle? I am guessing you meant the u-joint was angle to the ground? The shaft cannot angle since it is solid mounted between two joints. But yes, those yokes can, and do wear and get loose. I can see that the seal is engaged so there is plenty of spline engagement. Also possible that at some point this vehicle was picked up with a forklift which would have used the drive shaft as a lift point. These certainly will not have done wonders for the shaft or the yoke. I have seen many, many bent drive shafts on military vehicles thanks to DRMO and the even worse driving Government Liquidation forklifts.

Yea, well, I have a new driveline coming and I have a new yoke as well.

Well, guess I’m going have to pattern this 151.
At lease, it’s license and registered in California. And that’s worth the cost of the repairers.

But I know that I can quiet this monster down.

By the way, not sure where your located, but will you be attending the MVCC meet in Plymouth California this year???

Well that didn’t work. The new Driveline is just as bad as the first one. So, I sent it off to be rebuilt.
I did get one of the drivelines lengthen a little less than 1/4 inch and balanced.
WOW, 70% of the noise went away.
Now I can hear other noises. Yep, the Differential is noisy, so is the transmission. But it sure runs a lot quieter.

Ordered a new yoke, and a differential rebuild kit.
I’ll do that after the show next week.

Where did you get a diff rebuild kit and what comes in it? Most of the ones I have seen are nothing more than spider gears and the cross.

I found this so called kit on eBay.
Knock off, I’m sure of it.

Yes, spider gears, ring and pinion gear set and seals.
Three items. Cost a ton of cash.

Also, back to my driveline issue.
On my first M151A1, I was sure that MY transmission had a yoke retaining clip that kept the rear transmission yoke from falling out of the transmission.
My A2 trans doesn’t have one. I was also told that these transmissions never had one.
As it turns out, I was sort of correct.
The yoke retaining clip is located on the rear output seal housing. But only on the early models.
I found a picture.
TM 9-2320-218-20, September 1871, page 2-176, plate or figure 2-292.
The clip is there, clear as day, held in place by a Flat Head Machine Screw.
It also shows up in the 1968 manual as well.

But in the 1978 manual-34P, page 156, that part was deleted and no longer listed. Same in the -20P, page 70-1 in 1986 manual.

That retainer was only used for a couple years on the very first run of straight 151's.
