Re: u-joints
There are two types.
Axle and driveshaft.
Dont have any civy equivalents.
I would be very careful with choosing anything other than originals.

Re: u-joints
The u-joints on the drive shafts are one type and the u-joints on the propeller shafts (going to wheels) are the other type. I was able to get some many years ago for the propeller shafts at my local NAPA store. The older fellow working there measured the inside diameter of the cup and length of the u-joint shaft. They were a little bit more heavy duty than the NOS and seemed to work fine. I doubt if you can find anyone with the patience to measure the u-joints at the local auto parts store. All they want now days is for you to tell them what it fits on and as you know the m151 is not in their automotive books.

Re: u-joints
There use to be a list of civilian parts that can be used to replace the military parts on a 151.
I just bought a pair of 28 volt headlights from Napa auto parts. Listed as NAPA 4800-N.
The list also shows that the axle U-Joints:
Part #1-5900 and it’s made by PDQ (NEAPCO INC).
I bought 8 u-joints on eBay. They work great and I’m very happy with the parts.

Re: u-joints
The ones listed as working as civilian replacements are not correct. They will work in a pinch but you will find that if you measure them they are shorter than the original so once the caps move out to the resting position in the yoke the cross will have a lot of lateral movement. This will cause vibration and early failure.

Re: u-joints
Ok, so the part I just listed are not correct ?
That’s good to know.
Now the u-joints I got on eBay I know do fit and they are a bit beefy. And they do fit very snug.

Ordering one right now! They ship quickly and are priced well IMO.

Re: u-joints
About 20 years ago i had a u-joint fail on a vacation trip to So. Utah. The failure was in Elko NV about halfway on the trip and too far to get to the destination and too far to go back home without a fix.
Anyway, the commercial available U-joint worked for what I needed. But... as was pointed out previously, it is not an exact fit. The cups ride in enough to be noticeable so they need to be pressed in as close to centered as possible. We continued successfully on the trip and back home.
At home i purchased a NOS u-joint and replaced the commercial joint. Here's my opinion: In a pinch the civilian u-joint works OK but I wouldn't take the chance on it as a permanent replacement. I look at this way, the joint is not going to fail sitting still in the garage. IT's going to fail under load at speed. The damage the axle will do flopping around to the undercarriage will far exceed the cost of the correct joint.
As an aside, many years ago there was a list of civilian 'replacement' parts from the apparently defunct http://www.muttmotorpool.com/Civpart.html . Here's the list (i take no credit for the list nor blame if these don't work) As this list is over 20 years old, don't expect things to be on the shelf.

Re: u-joints
I think having the driveshaft balanced is important so the nuts stay on the U clamps of the u joints. One time I found the nuts loose so I had it balanced.Maybe my driveshaft was a 1 shot being defective, I don't know.

Re: u-joints
That’s the same list I have.
I use a number of parts from that list.
But I haven’t used the u-joints yet.
I did use the fuel pump, headlights, taillights, spark plugs, oil filters ( I get filters for free ) and points/condenser for the distributor.
