speedometer inoperative

Post by 67N20 » Thu Aug 26, 2021 2:24 pm

I changed power packs on my A1 thought I would exercise this one for a while. This is an old transmission, transfer case. It works really good except for the small leak on the parking brake spindle.. Well the speedometer quit, the gear that hooks to the cable is stripped. The driving gear on the transmission shaft looks really good. The only thing that seems wrong is the gear slides on the shaft back and forth more than i think it should. my other newer (A2) transmission is built different and the drive gear stays in place on the shaft. Is there suppose to be a spacer or two on the old green transmission, to keep the gears lined up ?? I imagine ill have to take this apart to repair it ?

Thank you

clem

Installed a NOS transmission in my A2 some years back.
On the first test ride the speedo gear failed.
Come to find out the bolt holding the parking brake had unloosened.
It allowed the gear to moved on the shaft consequently destroying the speedo gear.
Tightened the bolt and bought the replacement kit ,drained the oil and refilled.
All has been fine for the kast 8 years.

H'mmm.... My A2 transmission had a loose parking brake bolt, but everything worked just fine, This A1 transmission I have the bolts tight, but I will check again. (this an older A1 transmission original OD green paint) The gear on the shaft slides back and forth about an inch each way. Where the A2 is built different and will not slide on shaft. I used the A2 trans for 1 1?2 years, I never used the A1 transmission, it was always on my test engine, that ran on a stand.

That looks like the gear that stripped, the A1 and A2 are a little different. I tried the speedometer gear from the A2 in the A1 but I could barely hear some noise, so i took it back out and it was starting to strip. Now i run without a speedometer hooked up. I took the drive cable out of housing and reattached the cable housing. To keep the dirt out.

Thanks for the information Fil

If the gear is already chewed up it will need to be replaced along with the driven gear. That was probably the noise you heard, one bad gear and one good gear. Once all good gears tighten the bolt on the drum to spec and I suggest you use some blue lock-tite and the locking tab.

I finally got around to fixing the speedometer...... Just like Fil said check the bolt that holds on the parking brake drum (wheel). My bolt was flush to the drum and the locking tabs where all in place, but still it was really loose, surprised it was still on.

Once again thank you everyone

I like how you ask in a post if there is any way to fix the problem, You get a detailed answer and the very next post you say you fixed it and give credit to someone else! I usually do not bother with this kind of stuff but this is all in three connected posts!! I am glad to hear you got it fixed anyway.
