Not much info in your post. $1K is cheap if it is all there but we need to see pictures to make any real judgement.

A grand is kind of cheap!
What does the body look like?
Especially the underside.
The mechanicals are somewhat important but usually can be handled more easily.
Would live to see pics.

1,000 bucks is real cheap but it all depends on what the underneath looks like before we can tell you whether it is worth it. A cut with a good quality weld is a good buy but a cut with a bad weld is usually scrap metal. The engine issues are nothing to worry about. If you get a decent vehicle for 1 grand then replace the engine or rebuild it.
A lot also has to do with your skill set. A cut that needs body work is still repairable with all of the panels that are out there today but do you have the equipment and skills to do the work? If you have to pay someone to do the work it would be cheaper to buy one already done.

You can get most parts needed for the M151 in Texarkana, Red River Parts.

So many unknowns...

BUT no one has yet discussed how much fun $1000 buys you. If a grand gives you ticket to ride the 'fun bus' -and- if there is an actual title (one that actually goes to this vehicle) I would say you should give it serious consideration (provided you have basic automotive skills.) This is the place to get all the directions and advice you would need to get through 99% of the mechanical trouble you might be faced with so, that's covered. The M151 is simpler than the jeep. That's for sure.

On the other hand...

Make a list of what it would take (in additional money spent) to get it the way you would want it to be because with these old vehicles, the sky is the limit. In short, you can spend as much as you want to on 'em. Do you have the dinero to get all that done?

And finally...

There is ALWAYS a better vehicle to start with. You can save a lot of time and aggravation by settling down and actually shopping for a vehicle that will suit your personal tastes and skill sets best. Happily, this forum does a pretty fair job presenting worthwhile vehicles for sale and reporting on finds around the country on sites such as Craigslist and FacePlant.

Cheers,

Summation:
If you want a Beater jeep to drive around and have fun, buy it and put another 1K in parts into it (Engine)

If you want to get it for restoration of a factory vehicle it will NEVER be that and you'd be better off passing.

"I know nothing about these things I'm a Willis guy"

Before you buy, look into M151 MUTT history, they were designed with independant rear axles like a VW. Great for off road and reasonable turn speeds, but not a slalom car for zipping around turns, especially highway off-ramps at speed, the rear end lifts, then tucks under and you can roll it, nothing like the solid rear axle jeep you have been raised with.
Study it, learn it's habits and it is a safe vehicle for it's intended off road purpose.

1st A1 MUTT I picked up was well used from a Snapon Tool dealer with a limp as it was rolled at 15mph in the sand, crushed his leg, sued the Govt. and he lost (it had worn out suspension and oversized tires contributing to the issues)
It's conditions based more than speed, they can get squirley and NEW OWNERS should take it easy to learn their limitations.

Putting a 17 year old kid in a M151 is a very bad idea. But I think you really needed to go over the bottom of that thing, that price was far too low and you pretty much always get what you pay for. Wait till the kid finds out i does not have 4 wheel low range.
