New member/owner from Cassville MO
New MUTT owner in SW Missouri. Saw mine on marketplace awhile back and just had to have it. Prior service memories
Titled as a 1960 M151, I'm wondering what I have here. I believe I have a good start but pretty sure it's a mix of numerous a1-a2 parts. Powertrain gone through last year, all new parts. Story is, was supposedly "saved" from decommission at Ft. Hood and seller's buddy saved it, seller did a "restoration" on it in 2020.
My issue is this: starts up, idles fairly well but sounds like an irregular miss at tailpipe. Take off down the road, runs pretty good until you get about a mile away from home then it acts like it wants to die, can usually keep it running enough to limp home. It does this every single time I've had it out. When I get back home, I can start it up and it idles until you shut it off.
I've changed fuel, fuel filters, checked plugs/gap, adjusted carb. Zenith 13660. Have a carb kit ordered along with a coil and capacitor.
Seems I've read similar problems but no particular outcome. Realize it's usually multiple things just hoping someone sees this and has the answer.
I am the ranger at Roaring River State Park south of Cassville MO if there's anyone close by......thanks in advance, couple photos attached of our MUTT.

Judging from the distance you are driving before the problem hits I am going to guess that maybe the gas cap is either for a later emissions style system and is not vented or you have a cap with a fording valve in it that is set closed for fording. You are driving far enough that the tank is developing a vacuum and no gas is getting to the carb. Does it have a mechanical fuel pump on the engine or an electric pump in the tank? It appears that this could be an early straight 151. Does it have a third light over top of the right tail light? If not it is most likely a 63 or earlier straight 151. The floor drains would be oval type centered in the front floor. Later front drains were scupper drains at the back edge of the floor. It does have an A2 windshield, later seats and a later E-brake assy.. Looks like someone was in the process of adding turn signals.

A2 Steering wheel too.
Look at the gas tank cap, you see two prongs sticking out on it, if installed to one twist it is vented, another position it will be sealed for fording operations and not last very long unless the fording valve (you don't have) is opened and air enters the tank through the aircleaner line (again you should not have without a fording kit)
Other than that, it can go into coils, condensors heating up, fuel tank pickup tube clogging issues after ten minutes, filters on fuel lines, etc.
Start simple like Rick said, report back.
He's VERY patient ....send more photos then maybe get some correct paint on her .

Oval floor drains in front floors. There is a fuel pump on the block. Does have the two "prong" gas cap....will check that today! Wasn't aware there were two settings.
Thanks

Shovel handle brackets and bolt on footman loops. Appears to be eatly 151. And no blackout light with long stiffener rib.

Well, wasn't fuel cap. Died a half mile from the house except this time I couldn't get it started again and had to tow it home. Checked carb for fuel spray, nada. Disconnected at in line filter, no fuel. Sat for 5 minutes in its parking spot and with a full choke, it started. Idles like it always has, like it wants more fuel.

Steve, start with the simple things. Like removing the fuel filters (I presume you have fitted a clear plastic in-line filter).
These filters cause more problems than what they cure. Take it off and see if the vehicle runs correctly without it.

I'll grab some fuel line tomorrow and delete the filters, see what happens. Have a carb kit coming, previous owner said he put a kit in it last year and that coil was new at build too. He thinks fuel pump.

Re: New member/owner from Cassville MO
How old is the fuel, if it has some crud floating in the tank that gets sucked up to block the pickup tube until the suction releases it (off) then repeats...could cause the problem. If you have the fuel line off, blow back into tank with some light air pressure to ensure lines clear.
clear racing filters (type that can be taken apart) can be useful in chasing dirty fuel or fuel tanks.

Emptied tank as I had thought it might be water in tank and put in new fuel. Haven't cracked open tank to check sending unit/pick up yet.

Re: New member/owner from Cassville MO
It may still have the electric pump in the tank and with it the original filter in the tank which could be clogged. You can pull gas through the pump with no problem but the filter needs to be clean if it is in there. Also, if one of the valves in that pump is stiff or partially clogged that could also be giving you a problem. What king of fuel flow do you get out of the line right at the carb with the line off and cranking the engine with the switch off? You should be getting good strong spurts. Ken hates inline filters but if that pump with 4 1/2 lbs. of pressure can't push through the inline filter then that means the filter is clogged and it has done it's assigned duty. But, having a filter on the inlet side of a mechanical pump could cause issues since the vacuum side of the pump may not be as strong. In theory it should be equal to the pressure side but it does not work out that way always. You could just clamp a piece of metal fuel line in place of the filter for the time being since you do still have the stock filter on there to protect the carb.
