Yoke salvage
Well just replaced rear trans case seal and re-sleeved yoke . Only to find a couple of days later it started leaking again , coming from end cap on yoke. I’m thinking after I sleeved it , it probably damaged cap from pounding sleeve on also cleaning probably freed up gunk that kept it from leaking, just a guess. Ordered a new yoke so no biggy, but I wasted a sleeve . Is there any use hanging on to the old one? Can it be repaired somehow for a spare ?

It may be leaking between the splines. Permatex on the splines might help. Different opinions on what type is best.

I thought about doing that but didn’t want to go through all the work again just to have it leak again. So I just ordered a new one

There is a pressed in cap in that yoke and if you try to force it onto the shaft too fast it will pop the cap loose. You need to slowly push the yoke on the output shaft. You cannot seal the splines since you have to have movement to get the driveshaft in. That yoke is designed to slide in and out. You can clean it out very well and seal the inside of the cap, not the splines, with RTV. I would also seal the outside of the perimeter of the cap with the RTV. But it has to be spotlessly clean, no oil at all or the RTV will not adhere. I successfully welded one back in on one of mine but it was very tedious with a TIG welder to keep the heat down on the yoke.

I ordered a new one, should I apply rtv to it or not since it’s new ?

No, just put it on slow. But you will need to put a sleeve on it since the seal is sized for the sleeve. I do not pound them on, I put the whole thing in my big vice and slowly close the vice and use that as a press. Be sure to oil the yoke before putting the sleeve on and it will go a lot easier.

Freeze plug inside, good idea George. Just make sure there is enough room for the yoke to go all the way on after putting the freeze plug in there. I have an old yoke that I use for installing the seals, The plug is removed completely and I have ground about an inch plus off the end of the yoke so it will go in far enough to seat the seal without bottoming on the gears. Having the seal on the yoke and using that to seat it means the seal is perfectly straight the entire process. It also means you are pressing on the entire metal seal surface to install it so no bent edges.
