Transfer case seals
Need to replace seals on transfer case is it as simple as removing yoke replacing seals and adding sleeves? Can’t find videos or step by step pictures for this even tm doesn’t show a how to , it only shows differentials seal replacement.
Also I’ve seen nos seals and sleeves for sale but they come in a pack of three. Why is that ? Different styles? Or just an extra one included in case you screw up?
If anyone knows where I can find a how to video or if you have pictures please share.
Thanks

Re: Transfer case seals
The kits come in a pack of three because the park brake drum has a seal. Is the 2 wd/4wd shifter shaft seal leaking too ? At the least pull the detent plug, spring & ball out of it there will probably be sludge in there !

Will do. Are seals all the same or is there a certain one for parking brake drum?

I believe that all three seals in kit are same but one of the sleeves is different, probably the park brake drum one. The yokes have plugs in the end & would be a good time to be sure of their integrity.

Re: Transfer case seals
The rear output seal is easy since the housing comes off the transfer case and you can change the seal on the bench. Do this one first so you can see just how tough it is to get these seals out and in. The front output will make you use every single four letter word you know, and teach a few you didn't. This is due to the position of the output above the cross member. The parking brake drum is easy since it is right there in front of you from inside the vehicle. The transfer case shifter seal does not come in the kit and is not fun to do. I do not suggest you try it in the vehicle unless you are comfortable with disassembling a transfer case shift shaft through a small port in tight quarters. You cannot pull the seal from the outside because it is so small, noting to grip. The shaft has to come out and the seal driven out from inside. It can be done on the vehicle, I just do not recommend it.

Regarding the housing on the rear when it comes out does it have a gasket ? I plan on doing the rear first since it’s the leaky one then the others as needed.
Also I was told one of the sleeves is for parking brake only it’s the thicker one correct?

Re: Transfer case seals
I honestly don't remember about the sleeve but you will be able to tell when you look at it. When you say thicker you mean wider right? They should all be the same thickness. And be very careful putting those sleeves on, use oil on the yoke and I use a vise to clamp the sleeve onto the yoke nice and slow so I can feel and watch it. If you hammer it on and it goes just a hair crooked it will be ruined. Slow and easy, Patience is the key here. As far as the gasket, yes, there is a gasket but it is very easy to just get gasket material from the parts house and make your own or use RTV. If you use RTV do not go overboard, thin coat, let it cure for a little while and then assemble. Make sure all the old gasket is off and clean and dry. If you use a regular gasket it can go on dry but I always use Permatex #3 sealant on paper type gaskets.

Re: Transfer case seals
The narrow sleeve is for the parking brake, as George said, you can heat the sleeves, also freeze the yokes, the sleeves will slip right on.

Re: Transfer case seals
Interesting, I never tried the heat trick on the sleeves because they are so thin and I just figured they would shrink and grab instantly in the first inch. That was the trick for VW distributor and cam gears.
