Starter spins backwards
Hello there, I need help please!
I took my M151 starter apart to inspect and clean it, now it rotates the wrong direction.

Re: Starter spins backwards
Did you hook your batteries back up backwards? It is a DC motor, that is the only thing that will make it go backwards. Unless you repolarized the fields in the starter and that would take some serious work while it was apart jumping the fields with jumper wires and batteries.

Re: Starter spins backwards
If you happened to replace the Bendix, there was a glut of them on the surplus market that were made for a front mounted starter, not the rear mounted starter that the M151 uses. They operate in the reverse direction of the rear mounted starter.

They were the ones for the Hawk missile loaders weren't they? The automatic trans had a front starter hookup I believe.

Re: Starter spins backwards
Riickf
a starter is a series motor
if it has a wired field
if you reverce the + and - cables it wil run the same direction
you put the complete starter reverce field and armature
if it permanent magnetic fields (modern starters )
it turns the other way
you reverce only the armature

Re: Starter spins backwards
Thanks for clearing that up George. I thought I had heard of that but have never run into it myself that I can remember. Hopefully that is his issue since that would be a quick and easy fix. I pretty much always matchmark things when I take them apart since I am always working on several projects at once. Anyone with ADHD will know exactly why and what I am talking about. I learned long ago that since I cannot focus on one thing for too long then I would make it work for me by just doing more things at once. It has served me quite well over 50 years.

Re: Starter spins backwards
Thanks for all the help.
Ok, I guess I left out some info. I did mark the endplate with the case. I also took pics, but not close enough to see for sure which brush went to which hood. The first time I put it together and it didn't run in the right direction I tried rotating the end plate about 90 degrees, still rotating in the wrong direction. So I pulled the endplate off again and swapped which hood the field winding brushes were in, put it back where the marks aligned, still rotating in the wrong direction.

Re: Starter spins backwards
You are SURE the voltage polarity is correct? You have checked it with a meter?

Re: Starter spins backwards
The bendix isn't an issue, the starter is turning the wrong direction. And its the same bendix that worked before.
I installed it in the bell housing initially, now I am just bench testing it with jumper cables.
I forgot to mention that I did try switching the + and - jumper cables at the starter, still wrong rotation.
And I did check battery polarity, its good.
After just after re-verifying the polarity, I changed the meter to continuity mode, put the meter leads on the starter cable lug and the case and had continuity. Changed meter to ohms, touched leads together, .2 put them back on the lug and case, .4
my brain is starting to hurt...

Re: Starter spins backwards
Going back to the start of this, you say it's going the wrong way, in reference to what is it turning the wrong way?
If it's sitting on the bench, the bendix pointing away from you.....and you apply power, which way does the top of the bendix turn? Your right side or left side.

Re: Starter spins backwards
It spins backwards according to the arrow on the side that indicates the direction of rotation.
And the fact that when it is installed I can hear it spinning but its not turning the engine over even with the spark plugs removed.

Re: Starter spins backwards
Hi
I stil say the only different is the back plate place
Electric you use the same intern parts als before
Do you have try the plate 60 degree left or right turn
Normale the brunches are sitting beween the field coils
If the starter is turning the wrong way the bendix can not go out
Thuis come trow the splines direction at the armature
George
