I had this happen to me on a starter. It was for a 6v Dodge engine. I took the starter out, did some work and when I put it back together it would spin the wrong way. Reversing polarity did nothing. Still wrong way. I applied voltage momentarily the same way you would polarize a generator and that fixed it.

Matt:
Were you spinning it in the 'correct' direction, then flashed a wire between positive stud and the casing?
That's the only way I could see changing the fields to the desired direction, it would have to be rotating.

Ok, how do you polarize a generator?

I've already tried spinning it the correct direction by hand while I put the positive jumper cable to the lug and the ground to the case, it just spun it back the opposite direction.

Could the shaft/gear be on backwards? Maybe not the right words, plus my memory is not good,I can remember something like that a long time ago.I have not a good recollection of this starter

No I wasn't spinning it. The whole situation was very frustrating. I seemed to be stuck in some grey realm between Physics and Magic when it occurred. I think I applied 12v to a 6v starter though to do it. I don't know how it got going backwards or exactly how it is I got it going the right way again.

Ok its officially fixed! And I officially am a dumb a$$! You were right George, I had the endplate off by one set off screw holes.
I must have guessed and marked the endplate after I took it off because when I aligned it to the proper marks that were pre-punched next to the dataplate (duh), it worked perfectly!!! (see pics)

I really should get better reading glasses, Darren at GJ Alternator had to show me the marks!

Anyway, thanks to all for the ideas and input, I really appreciate it. You guys are great!
Hopefully I'll have this thing wired up n' fired up by the weekend!
Maybe even make it to the Moab Jeep Safari this year.

These are bent wires used to hold back the brush springs so I could get the bushes over the commutator and then unbend them, lifting and turning to get them out before tightening the endplate.

1 in the endplate, 2 in case!
