Re: Problem installing the rear driveshaft
I thought you had replaced the seal in the beginning, I am going to bet that a new seal will solve the problem. About the only seal kits you can get are the ones with the wear sleeve for the yoke so make sure the sleeve goes on the yoke straight and all the way on. I usually take a very fine file and dress up the leading edge of the sleeve so I know it will not catch the seal as it goes on and be sure you lube up the seal and the yoke and rotate the yoke while pushing it in. Also, check the yoke you have in there and see if the leak is coming from around the seal surface or is it coming from inside the yoke where the metal plug is driven in the center of the yoke? If it is leaking there it is best to replace the yoke. And yes, you DO need the wear sleeve even on a new yoke since the seal is sized to fit the sleeve. That yoke has to come out pretty far before it comes out of the seal, a lot more than a half inch. A good way to find out is put your drain pan under there to drain the oil for your seal change but instead of taking out the drain plug slowly pull out the yoke, once the yoke clears the seal the oil will pour out pretty quick and you can note where it cleared the seal. Then you will also need to note whether the seal that was in there was the correct seal. I would take out the drain plug after this test since you will have oil dribbling out while you are trying to do the seal work otherwise, it is a miserable enough job without extra misery added.

Re: Problem installing the rear driveshaft
I appreciate everyone's help. Putting these Jeeps back together again is a learning experience even when you have done it before.
In the final analysis, the "allowable" gap on the transfer yoke was not the issue. I went down this wrong path because when I first tightened the bolts on the driveshaft, the oil from the trans came out sometime after this was done. I didn't find it until the next day so I assumed pulling the yoke out was the cause. My gap is 1/2", the other A2 I looked at was at 3/8".
I fixed the leak(s) by replacing the rear seal and getting a yoke with a good end cap. It will leak out of the splines even with some silicone around it. Of course the front was leaking as well and I found that someone had put on a half speedi sleeve on that yoke. Replaced the speedi sleeve and a new seal so there are no leaks now. I guess the moral of the story is transfers/differentials that have been sitting around 15 or 20 years, the seals are going to leak.
BTW I got the engine started!
