M151A2 Holley Carb

Post by Data Plate » Mon Sep 02, 2019 5:41 pm

I have a Holley carb on my A2. Does anyone know if theres a factory setting for the mixture screw like 1.5 or 2 turns out. Doesn't seem to be running 100% getting some back fires when i get off the gas and would like to try the factory setting if there is one.

It's 3/4 out on the mixture screw.I'll let you know where I found it, with some backtracking--It's in the 34 TM, 1972, Chapter5, page 5.1, Holley carb section.
I had the same problem, there is a big hex head bolt/cap on top of carb, loosen it, you will find a metal screen in it, I cleaned it with carb cleaner. The mutt goes better/no backfiring.

I have pointed this out many times, The Holley was discontinued in 61-62. There must have been a good reason for it since they never brought it back and parts are not available for that carb so basically there are no settings specifically for an A2. Just turn it in till it stumbles, back out till it stumbles and then got dead center between those two spots. Myself personally, I cannot see the fascination with the Holley carb. I have found a properly set up Zenith will run much better. AND, you can still get new parts for the Zenith!

I cleaned the filter today and turned the screw in and backed it out 3/4 turn, then turned right and left with it to get the in between spot, Seems to run pretty well but does pop sometimes. maybe timing ??

Is it backfiring out of the carb or the exhaust? If out of the carb then running too lean or timing to far advanced, most likely too lean. If out the exhaust it is due to rich exhaust being lit of in the exhaust by oxygen getting in through a leak in the exhaust somewhere.

I have been downloading all early issues of PS magazine to better understand when changes were made to parts and the body itself. PS Magazine #163 (June 1966) says that the Zenith replaced the Holly starting with registration number 2G.0068. That would have been when Ford regained M-151 production from Kaiser Jeep with contract number DA-20-113-AMC 02787 (T). This was the first of the three year contracts instead of the previous one year contracts that the Army let out for bid. The Ford contract is dated 15 Feb 64. Kaiser Jeep had a one year contract with a six month extension which icluded M-151A1's. The last registration number they used was 2F.8817.

Rick,
I was under the impression besides the many safety upgrade mods from 151 to A1 the removal of the holley was to limit its speed, hence the fascination with speed. Speeding in a M151 in itself is scary enough

Data,
Can you post a picture of your system, I'm curious to see this.

The carburetor has nothing to do with the top speed of the vehicle. That engine is 72 horse power with the Holley or the Zenith and it is only going to go 60-65 MPH at best. I prefer 50 myself.

Ya 50 is the max I ever attempt if I’m feeling crazy but a I would have to disagree about carburetors because they have everything to do speed: for fuel and air mixture through its orifices resulting In mixing with compression as you know but enough about general automotive knowledge what about that picture?

A better carb might give you more speed if the efficiency of the rest of the engine was up to it but the exhaust manifold on these engines is a MAJOR choke point and would not let it rev not matter what. That particular Holley carb is no better than the Zenith that replaced it.
