Was my MUTT Cut?
Hey guys,
I know I seem pretty ignorant asking this question, but has my MUTT been cut? I've owned it for over 20 years and due to the fact that I don't really have the time to enjoy it I am considering selling it. But I want to represent it accurately. The footwells look perfect but underneath there seems to be some welding. What say the experts? It's a 1964 A1 model. I've attached some photos.

I'll wait to hear from the experts but by all accounts that's a typical rust out spot and typical repair spot. There was even a military underbody repair kit that included unibody repair parts for those areas.

Not only was it NOT cut but it is in exceptionally good condition under there. The front cross member is a normal rust area and as was said there is a repair part for that. Even the front floors look good.

You would know if it was cut if the frame rails themselves had welds up along their sides (there are no "frame rails" but the two main box channels are as close to the 'frame' as you can call it. The rest could (or might not have ) had an underbody repair kit, but it really doesn't look like it unless they were such a great welder, etc.
The underbody kit has pre-drilled holes to tack weld in the panels, not a full fillet type weld. (from my memory)

PS: how about some pics from above just to see the jeep? WAW

Re: Was my MUTT Cut?
Really nice. Most of the demil regulations took place after the A1 was out of service, so many escaped being cut in half, and many were sold outright as surplus before being banned.
What's the strange loop for back by the rear quarter panel? grab handle for a stuntman to hold onto while being dragged?

Re: Was my MUTT Cut?
Well, The half cut regulation started on the 5th of February 1973 so considering they released the vehicles ten years after date of service that would mean that starting with the 1963 models you were looking at half cuts. They did not get real anal about it for another year or so after that but from 74 on they were all supposed to be cut. As Will said, A lot got out uncut through various ways. I was also wondering about that bar on the rear, is there one on the other side also?

Re: Was my MUTT Cut?
Remember USN/USMC and USAF don't always follow USA published regs for property disposal.
Navy tended to roll things off transferring them to the Davy Jones locker as they were returning home (lots and lots of things if a refit was scheduled) or so I have been told.
The T-38 Talon (seen in movie Dragnet with Dan Akeroyd) was a USAF plane that made a hard landing (crashed) on a Marine base (from memory) out West, the USAF sent a crew out to strip everything off it, tossed the bet up carcass into the scrap pile on post, it was sold off as scrap, then rebuilt with private funds by the same guys that assembled it at the Northrop factory (Hired by owner) and the USAF wanted it back BAD, but it had been legitimately sold off, so they had zero claim and FAA awarded him the tail number NT38CL. Now there are like 8 in civilian hands according to google.

Re: Was my MUTT Cut?
This is true, I am basically referring to the stuff that came out through DRMO. Remember them? The good old days of go to the base auctions and plain outright purchases without the auction BS. Then the Government decided it would be better to have a private company handle the sales so they could get money without dealing with the people. Welcome Government liquidation. And THEN the government got pennies on the dollar of what was sold. Yep, makes perfect political sense to me.

Re: Was my MUTT Cut?
Thanks for the great stories and info.
The bar on the back of the Jeep was there when I bought it in 1997. I didn’t know that it wasn’t OEM until years later. But it makes an effective bumper of sorts and would leave holes if I removed it, so I’ve just left it all these years.
