Running rich and won’t idle

Post by ltsimp » Sat Oct 14, 2023 7:42 am

All of a sudden my Mutt decided to not idle and when I adjust the idle screw up to where it will run the engine runs way to rich. Black exhaust smoke. When I come to a stop the engine dies. I found a tear in the accelerator diaphragm. Might this cause my problem? Is so, where is a trustworthy place to get a replacement. And if there may be something else to examine please let me know. Thank you for any help you may provide.

A friend of mine had the same issue and his had the same symptom - started running rich. I'm sure others will chime in. As far as I know, you'll have to buy a carb kit unless there is a civy option. I'd recommend the kit that Norfar makes as it uses modern material for today's fuel. Also, you're not using a 30 year old carb kit. As stated, I'm sure others will chime in.

hat will definitely cause your rich running issue. If the diaphragm is that old then the carb probably needs to be rebuilt anyway. As Guy said, Norfar has the kits, P/N K2167. But be sitting down when you look at the price. I used to buy these kits ten at a time when I was rebuilding carbs on a regular basis. This was only 5 years ago or so and they were 35.00 each. Now, the last ones I bought were almost 70.00!! I only keep one or two on hand now.

Interesting, a Chinese kit for the MUTT Carb. Wonder how many of these ended up in China
Maybe the Vietnamese needed the kits after the War.

Ironically yesterday I had my Carb needle foul up from Ethanol. Only been two weeks since running, and no fuel was getting past the needle valve. Pulled the bowl plug and cranked with power off and saw no fuel coming out. (fuel was in the clear in-line filter I use, and pumping) Pulled carb off in ten minutes, took it apart in two on fender and confirmed darned needle was stuck in there.
Next morning, put pipe dope on the main gasket (I use teflon pipe sealant as a gasket seal material, it allows reuse of the gaskets and seals nicely)
reassembled and installed in ten minutes, shot of cleaner down the throat to help save the starter juice, fired up and ran fine. Show tomorrow, TOW equipped MUTT.

Found a source of non-ethanol at a farm service station (Southern States) about 20 miles from me that I will start filling up spare cans with fuel to keep her and the other vehicles happy.

There are parts in that kit I have never delved into when rebuilding a Zenith, (and I don't see a diaphragm spring in it...) not sure if it will come with an illustration / instruction sheet, but the pipe cleaner kit looks handy for the price they are asking.
Ordered 5 from another "vendor" at $11.64 each, if for nothing more than the diaphragm which doesn't fit any other carb I can ID when searching for accelerator pump diaphragms (photos) on-line.

The kit I ordered on Nov 20 has arrived. Looks nice , is in a sealed packet. Best I can tell there are no instructions - nor spring for the diaphragm. I am not up to speed on the Zenith carbs --I may be back on here looking for guidance with this. Thank you Jim T

Just so you know, the spring goes on the outside against the cover. It is a vacuum operated accelerator pump. I have seen more carbs come through my shop with the spring on the wrong side and a "dies when I hit the gas" complaint.
