Canadian Purchase?

Post by Jack Davies » Mon Dec 26, 2022 11:28 am

Good Afternoon, All.

I'm currently new to the M151, but I'm trying to read everything that I can find on her. It's addictive - let me tell you!

At present, I'm currently stationed in Canada - and I was wondering if it was possible to purchase an M151 and export it to Canada?

Many thanks in advance,

Jack

The way the laws are constantly changing anymore the best people to ask would be the Canadian authorities probably. Unless someone on here works for their border control they would probably have dated info. Then the bigger question is would you be able to bring it back into the US? I would think that since you are a US citizen (I am assuming) and stationed at a US base you would be but again, todays political climate is crazy.

Hello, Rick.

I'll start digging into the rules and regulations - but, Wow, are you ever correct about how things are changing!

To be fair and honest, no, I'm not an American citizen. I'm a Canadian who is a current serving member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. At present, I'm currently stationed in Canada - we get posted all over, which is why I specified that. My apologies for any confusion.

I just figured that if I start asking the tough questions now about import laws, I wouldn't be hit with a nasty surprise later.

Many thanks,

Jack

No need to apologize. I always wanted to move to Canada, up till your gun laws started changing for the worse. And your politics seemed to get as bad as ours. I can remember the days when crossing the border was a simple affair. I travelled there many times on my motorcycle in the 70's.

Actually, I've always wanted to move to the States! I've made a point of studying the Civil War, historical - and current - American political parties, plus major political decisions - both good and bad - made on both side of both Senate and Congress. Deeply fascinating, especially when one considered the long term effects of decisions made. I could elaborate on what I've been studying, but perhaps that best left for an off line discussion - especially around the Holidays.

That being said, as for our politics - could we simply trade? You take ours and we take yours?

Speaking of motorcycles, I was working for the Army Museum at CFB Borden - and many years ago they found a crate sealed between the walls of an old building being torn down. When they got the crate out - and opened it - they found a WWII Reliant motorcycle still in the cosmoline!

The guy in charge said, "Neat!"....and then banged the lid back down and that's it.

Aarrgghh!

And the crate probably has never been seen since, except buy that guy in his garage.

Last seen, the crate was on display at the museum - still in it's original markings.

And he still won't take that beautiful motorcycle out.... my goodness.

Jack, there’s no need for you to import an M151 to Canada; you can buy them here (I’m in Ontario). Canada purchased 935 M151A2s in 1974 to supplement our M38A1 fleet. These were mostly used by the “Army of the West” in places like CFB Wainwright, CFB Edmonton, CFB Shilo, etc. they were also used by units in Quebec and at CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick. I think some were also used in Germany. The only M151A2s in Ontario were brought with the CanadiAn Airborne Regiment when they were relocated to CFB Petawawa.

In 1978 all M151A2s, except the TOW variants, were outfitted with the roll-over protection system (ROPS); this is completely different from the US versions in that the body tub did not have to have big holes cut into them to accept the rear ROPS bar. Instead, there are three large plates on each side (foot wells, behind the seat backs, and on top of each rear corner) into which the bars of the ROPS fit. The Canadian ROPS is a single unit, unlike the American ones that disassemble into multiple pieces. The ROPS is fastened into short tubes on the plates with clevis pins to facilitate easy removal for airborne operations - though removing them and replacing them is a PITA.

These jeeps served until 1986 until phased out and replaced by the Bombardier Iltis. Having joined the Army in 1988 and using the Iltis for most of my career, and now owning an M151A2, I can say that it beats the Iltis hands down - actually, the Iltis was a complete POS from the get go…

Like the US variants, Canadian M151s were cut in half before disposal. Several enterprising individuals purchased boatloads of these from Crown Assets Disposal in the 1990s and began to weld them back together. There are many M151A2s in private hands in Canada (one is in my garage). I’d say your best place to find one is on Kijiji.ca - that is where I found mine , and have seen several others listed there. There’s a fella in Alberta by the name of Sung that restores them and sells them, so you may have luck there. Also, look up Maple Leaf Up Forum on Google and search M151A2 on that site. It will give you lots of info on Canadian M151s as well as photos and restoration blogs from owners. You can also find out your vehicle’s former CFR based on the serial number on the body tub.

Happy to help further, just send me a PM.

Cheers!

Brought an A2 body home from Canada in 2011.
No problem. Had cleared itcwith US Customs first.
Was not considered a vehicle since it was only sheet metal.
18 mos later had a built A2.

The M151A2 CDNs you'll read about are one of the last contracts by AM General. However, they are in rough shape due to the way the Crown ordered them demilitarized. You're not buying a green 4x4, you're buying a 50-yr old collector convertible.

The issue with provincial insurance and registration was mentioned. BC and Quebec have decided that all historic military vehicles, regardless of fact, were only ever designed to be used off road. Therefore, they consider them unroadworthy and severely limit their use. A Ford Model T can get a plate; an Iltis, Hummer, M38A1 or M37 cannot. I live in Onterrible and we do not have that registration issue yet. What is our biggest concern is insurance. I have to maintain a daily driver policy on another vehicle, and buy limited use collector car coverage from Haggarty. I could register it with an H for Historic plate, but again you've got limited use restrictions. The typical excuse anyone I know with an H plate is to have a set of tools onboard and plead 'road test' if pulled over.

I live in Ontario as well. My M151A2 CDN was bought in British Columbia - the issue abound title is true, however the previous owner got around that by somehow creating a bukshee VIN number, so that is what mine is registering as instead of the original vehicle serial number.

I drive with an “H” plate, and have bever had an issue with being pulled over by the police. But I have had many a cop car pull up next to me at a stoplight and comment how cool my jeep is… 😎

Regarding the M37, just label it a Dodge 3/4T Power Wagon.
Same difference, it's just a funny color green 4x4 Pickup Truck used by the Army.
Just a thought.

Go to one of the old Dodge website and get some Power Wagon emblems from an old Power wagon and mount them on the M37 and you are good to go.
