What year is my MUTT?

Post by nxslt1 » Tue Feb 21, 2023 8:41 pm

I'm working on an M151A2 and was just curious if somebody could tell me what year it might be. It's been sitting in storage for 20 years. Here are the numbers. There is no date of delivery stamped on it. Preshate the help.

NSH 2320-00-177-9258
MFD By Ford Motor Company
Contract No. DAAE 06-68-C-0001
MFR. SERIAL NO. 519409

muttguru is the guy you want talk to.He lives in England, but lately he has busy with some critical stuff. You could ask the internet the question using the data plate #.Maybe the contract # means it is 6-68??

The contract indicates first run Ford.
Does the body have a tag on the cowl?
Does it have side drains?
Any pics of front of jeep?
Serial number reads like a Marine Corps vehicle.
Some of these features might help identifying age.

No tag on cowl that I can find and I don't know what side drains are. I have a pic but it says file too large but doesn't give an acceptable size so I'm not going to guess. Something odd I just realized, the sticker on the valve cover says AM General and says it complies with 1974 standards but the tag says it's made by ford and I thought that motor was designed by ford also?? I know the motor or valve cover could have been easily changed but it only shows like 1200 miles on the odometer.

Those powerpaks were changed for no reason at all sometimes, they just needed practice at changing them and since it is a simple job they do it. Side drains are small cutouts on the front side of the drivers and passengers floors leading out the side panel to drain water. Ford had the drains inside the body towards the back of the floor by your heals going down through the floor. Ford used the floor drains and AMG used the side drains.

Since there is no apparent S/n on cowl I would guess it is a later AMG. Version of the A2.
As Rick says look for the side drains on the body to confirm its heritage.
Some people find the Ford more desirable but both versions are fun.

It has side drains AND I noticed that the plate on the dash has been screwed on. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be riveted on so I'm gonna say I've got an AM General.

Dataplates were installed with screws
Not rivets.
The age of your vehicle is still a questiion.

Now, if it has an emissions gas tank and the emissions canister or at least the bracket for the canister under the hood it is a 73 or later AMG A2.
Some pictures would make this a lot easier.

Data plate on driver rear fender is riveted on. The screws holding the data plate on the dash are obviously not factory plus since it has side drains we now know it's an AMG not a ford so the tag doesn't belong on it. It has what appears to be a vacuum canister and several lines running to the gas tank. Tried uploading pics but it says they are too big but doesn't tell what the acceptable size is and I don't have time to guess at it.

No doubt it is a replacement plate.
All were secured with black sheet metal screws
The carbon cannister indicates it is probably 73 forward.
Hope that helps

If you double clic on the picture on your computer and when open right clic on it a box will open and clic on resize and pic the first option. When asked where to save it just pic the same file it came from and it will ask if you want to replace it, say yes. Then you will be able to upload and use that pic. I do that for all my forums. I will experiment when I have time with the resizing and go up one size each time until the forum does not accept it and then I know going forward what to use.

Another place to look on youe jeep.
The wall of the drivers side to transmission may contain a little id plate.
The first line contains the p/n for body.
The second contains the serial.
If its there and you can read it copy it down and contact Ken, the Muttguru .
He can probably give a idea of its age.
Hope this helps.

Ken has been under very strict orders from both the doctor AND his wife to not get involved in the forums until he makes a full recovery from his heart attack. I don't know how long that will be but I think it prudent we give him all the time he needs.

1971 contract AM General plates are riveted - This is the only contract that this was done. All M151s and A1s use a #6 phillips head self tapping screw M151A2s other than the 71 contract AM general used a #10 phillips head self tapping screw. These all are pan head type screws even though they look "rounded". They where all zinc chromate (gray/silver) or yellow cadmium plated.
