oil leak

Post by Gary Turman » Wed Mar 25, 2020 6:23 am

My engine developed a bad oil leak from the rear of the engine. I plan on replacing both oil pan gaskets and rear main seal. The manual isn't very detailed so I was wondering if anyone has any tips on the best way to replace them.

Not much to say, power-pak has to come out, transmission has to come off and after that it is easy. The rear main seal is a one piece. I usually punch a small hole in one side and start a sheet metal screw in there and pull it right out. The pan gaskets are, well, pan gaskets. LOL. They have not changed in 75 years. Permatex #3 on both sides of the gasket very thin and RTV at the corners where there is a gap. Might want to replace the clutch since it is already out unless it is in excellent condition.

Good point George, The transmission has to come off the bell housing before you can take the bell housing off of the engine. And since the transmission/transfer case is such an odd shape it is good to have some extra hands or have the engine sitting on something and use the hoist to get the transmission off. It is NOT light!
