Re: My Dec 1954 M38A1
Pat,
Have you tried to scrape your bumper down to find any unit numbers ?
Also try the bumperettes. I just noticed the pto shaft and bird's nest
I use a push button razor scraper blade, it works pretty darn good, and you can do it nice and slow.
It would an awesome thing to find the history of you jeep !!!!
Thanks Illini !!
I was so happy to find a little history on my jeep by carefully scraping off the top coat on the front bumper and rear bumperettes .
According to the former owner the jeep was part of a property transfer program and ended up in Utah with a local Sheriff office for many years, but was never used, before being surplussed.
Pat may very well have the unit markings still on the jeep !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: My Dec 1954 M38A1
I don't mind that anyone post pics!! We are here to help each other. Thanks for the pics of the body work and your M38A1!! I am glad you did post the picture of the right side, I am trying to figure out what all the holes were used for. The pictures with the 2 holes close together on the vertical sides of the fender wells I think are for the radio speaker. I am trying to figure out what radios were installed. In the 3rd picture it sure looks like a data plate was attached at one time, can anyone possibly figure which one?
Thank you!
Thank you!

Hello Pat,
Great !
I think you are right about the speaker mount holes on your jeep.
They look the same spacing as my speaker mount pictured.
The holes do look like a data plate of some nature was riveted on there.
Hopefully someone will have some input that knows about types of radios.
I did read that some of these jeeps had a "big" radio set mounted in them which may explain your dual mount antennas.
I will get better pics of my passenger side wheel well top side tomorrow and post them.
Some of your welded up holes are for the strap footman loops, and the ax mounting bracket that bolts on there. Also additional holes for the loops that the straps attach to hold it down.
You can see them in my picture of the top of the passenger wheel well.
Nos phillips head bolts are widely available to re-install the missing footman loops on our jeeps. I am missing a few footman loops as well.
There should also be easy to find ax bracket to restore that area with a little hole repair work
You should also have a bracket that holds the top bow in the down position and such.
Best Regards,
Ray

Was able to do a little work today. Did some cleaning under the tub and found what appears to be orignal paint. I think it looks like late WW2 color to me.

Re: My Dec 1954 M38A1
Hello,
Here are some pictures to see what the holes the top of your wheel well are used for
Two footman loops to the right, attached with small phillips head screw/bolts, and I have a little wire clip to the rear. I assume for the antenna wire to clip into. To the left we see the ax head bracket, and there is 1 footman loop bolted to the top of the wheel well, hidden behind the bracket. Spot welded to the top of the bracket itself is a smaller sized footman loop as well for a strap.
Here is my antenna mount on top of the spare tire mount, your mounts are the dual corner mounts.
Here is the ax head bracket and how it mounts to the top of the wheel well :
This will give an idea of how things were configured to hold the ax, and also the straps for it, and the strap locations to hold the top bows down.
The rest of the holes were used for mounting the radio bracket itself. Except the 2 holes you can see above the speaker mount bracket, those 2 holes were also used for a footman loop, for a canvas strap to attach. Why it is missing ? Maybe it is removed when the radio mount is attached ? I do not know .
Maybe someone else will be able to add the answer, and also identify the type of radio that was mounted like this in these great Jeeps !!!
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: My Dec 1954 M38A1
Thank you for posting the pictures, It will help me a lot!! I agree, the clamp would be for the antenna coax. It looks like you had 2 different radio's at some point. Maybe a RT70? or a MT-299 mount? I am wondering why they didn't use the antenna mount on mine that bolts to the spare tire mount. Like the old saying "use what you have".

Hello Pat,
Keep us posted on your next restored area on your jeep .
Looking forward to it !!!
You have inspired me to start a little work on my M38A1
I want to get it started, so have started cleaning the gas tank sludge by filling it with Pine Sol, it seems to be working great so far.
I will add pictures to to my actual M38A1 G post ...if I can find it
Best Regards,
Ray

Hi Ray,
Not much going on for a bit. Waiting for the warmer weather. Anyone have a good buy on 7.00x16 NDT's? I will try to post more pictures in the near future.
Thanks, Pat

With the good weather I was able to catch up on some sand blasting. I was surprised to come across some of the older body Lead.

Gaining a little today. Sun was out and trying to finish removing the layers of old paint and applying some primer. Next will be some more body work. It was used as a street sweeper in Susanville California and had to remove some road tar, what a mess!
