Re: Additions to my motor pool
Hello M11,
Congratulations !!!!!!
Those are awesome additions to any Motor Pool
The old one looks easily restorable, and the restored one looks outstanding !!!
2 beautiful jeeps, ready to go back on patrol in Big Sky Country
What are the antifreeze dates ?
It looks like 1970 on one ?
It is nice to think they were still in active service in the 1970's !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: Additions to my motor pool
Hello,
That is great !
The jeep likely was still in service into 1978 or longer .
That is interesting because on my M38A1 it has a military engine rebuild tag that is from I think 1978 also.
The bumper markings on it I believe are from a Wisconsin Army National Guard Engineering unit.
I got it from Utah, where it spent all of its time after the Army as a surplus vehicle sent to a local government agency that never used it.
It has zero rust !
Keep us posted on your jeep !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: Additions to my motor pool
Ray,
I found something interesting on the red on. The data plate S/N is 40732, DOD 2/53 and the patent tag on the rear wheel well is MD 38078. The battery box cover is the early style with thumb screws but the front fenders are later style. Are both tag number suppose to match?
Thanks!
Tim

Not Ray, but, the serial numbers on both are supposed to match. John

Re: Additions to my motor pool
Hello Tim,
I believe they are supposed to be originally matching, but could have been switched during a rebuild program
by the government.
The fenders likely were swapped around at some point,
Joe Gopan would be the top M38-a1 expert here on the G in my opinion.
I hope he sees this post, but you can also PM him here as well.
He is very active here.
He did mention that if you look on the rear fender data plate, turn it over, as they sometimes marked the original USA hood number on it.
Possibly the body was swapped out, and the original data plate set was attached.
Post a picture of your battery tray cover, and the fenders as well, and maybe something can be determined from that ?
Best Regards,
Ray

Hello Tim,
One thing I can say is that Jeep looks rust free !!!
There are vendors that carry the special battery cover bolts to attach the lid.
It looks like it will be a great restoration !
Hopefully Joe can add some commentary here !

Re: Additions to my motor pool
Is the Grill hinged? Are there two rods that go from firewall to the top of the grill? Your body appears to be the early style that requires the early fenders that bolt to the frame. The early fenders do not have the cover plates, they will have the exposed diagonal seams.
Will research your two numbers for any hints in a day or two.

Re: Additions to my motor pool
1 Grille is hinged
2 No rod support for radiator
3 The fenders don’t have diagonal seams so I assume they are a later replacement
