The CJ's thru CJ-5 of the 60's used the same mirror I referred to, except it was black.

Hello Joe,

Thanks for the link info. I don't have any manuals yet for this jeep, but will soon.
I found some of the illustrations listed in online versions last night.

As the pictures were pretty distant, and slightly out of focus, it appears to me that it looks just like the WW2
King Bee mirror head as used in WW2.
Since those are plentiful and well made, I will get one for this jeep, but will first see if that mirror fits the shaft.
I have one on my 1942 GPW to test out.

It is also 5 inches wide.

I have also ordered the complete C clip type straps from WeeBee Webbing for this jeep, that also are of the WW2 style webbing.
This jeep has a one piece gas can strap, with a push lever buckle, but WeeBee said that was for a later model jeep without the C clip strap set.

Hello,

Great update for the rebuilt original Carter YS carburetor for the Jeep !!!!

Here is a Youtube link to Scoutpilot's excellent rebuild job he did for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fS3c6qMDVE

He also rebuilt the original fuel pump and vacuum pump assembly.
They will be shipped back to me in my ammo crate tomorrow by Rick.
Old Jeep Carbs, LLC.
I highly recommend using his professional services to get your Jeep in tip top running shape !!
I am so very happy about this rebuild, and will refill the crate and send it back to him with 4 more 529s WW2 carbs to rebuild next.

One should take advantage of someone's skills offered to rebuild these most important parts for your entire jeep, these craftsmen are few and far between !!
Build it back to factory specs, no stalling or gasoline leaking out the worn shafts !!!

Best Regards,
Ray

I dug out my NOS Spare King Bees that are in Chev 4X4 boxes, they match the shape in the pics I listed. These are tinted.

Hello,

I have been working on this beautiful jeep, and making good forward progress !!
I have bought many parts for her like new hoses, nos battery cables, top brackets for the batteries, things under the hood, as well as new windshield glass from a vendor that supplies the glass specially cut for the M38A1😃
I also bought an nos bottom seat spring for the passenger seat. Mine was missing, this is a beautiful spring assembly, that will get a new cushion cover hog ringed to it.
I still need to find the seat back cushion for this seat.

I have been working on cleaning and restoring the gas tank. I think this will be a great success !!
I blasted the tank, having first wire wheeled off all the paint.

Here are some pictures of that effort so far. I hope to have the exterior completed this weekend, primed and painted. I am using JB weld to seal the couple of pin holes, and also fill in all the little pitting on the tank.

Here is a pic of the Pinesol cleaning, it turned to a jelly substance and rolls right out to be shoveled up and bagged for the dump. Once the tank is restored and sealed up with the JB, I will fill the tank with Pine Sol to clean it out completely to a shiny condition.

Hello,

Here are some pictures of the new under hood shovel strap assembly and my original shovel. The shovel I bought years ago to go on my Willys MB, but it has a different curvature than the correct one fitting the side of an MB. But that is A -OK as it fits perfectly and tightly into position on the under hood bracket. A tight solid fit !!
Here is a pic of the original shovel strap that was dry rotted and broken off :

A great shovel and great new C clip straps from WeeBee !!!

One more thing done for this 68 year old beauty queen 😀😀😀
The shovel is back in service with its Jeep, where it belongs, ready for the future , jeeping again !!!

Hello,

I also have obtained new top bow attaching swivel bolts and chains for the jeep.
They look great, but the chain was a job to attach !!!
Resized_20210507_000342.jpeg
These will hold the top bows nice and secure. I also have the rear straps for the top bows from WeeBee 😃

Here are a couple of pictures of the cleaned up pitting. I wanted it spotless and clean of any rust "ticks" that had been pitting themselves into the steel.
I got them clean !!
Now will fill in with JB Weld.
Resized_20210506_181012.jpeg
Resized_20210506_181022.jpeg
The pitting is shallow so should be eliminated quite well with the JB.
The camera really picks them up to make them look larger that they are. I am planning to fill in most of the dented area with JB as well just to eliminate any potential leak from the crimped and damaged area.

Best Regards,
Ray

Ray, this is a great thread! Please keep the info coming.
I also recently added an M38A1 to my collection. I will be following this with great interest.
I do like the extra room compared to the GPW since I'm 6' 2" and my son is 6' 3".
Since you have original paint, do you have a 24 volt stencil anywhere?
I see you have the "max safe fuel accept" above the filler.
Is there also the "Caution: do not overfill" below the filler?

Hello,

Thanks for the comments !!

That is great that you have one now !!!! You are building a great collection 😃😃
They certainly are a little more comfy , and with much more leg room, and more comfortable spring seat cushions, these jeeps are hard to beat.

I don't see a 24V markings anywhere.
The jeep was repainted many times by the Army.
I can see the USA with number, painted over at least 3 times with US Army and the same number. All repainted in slightly different locations.
Yes the lower overfill stencil is there but painted over with the last coat of od. Likely painted over before it was transferred to the state government to sheriffs department program.
I uncovered the name "Flash" painted on both sides. I uncovered the name on the passenger side.
I will try the uncovering driver's side markings soon.
I likely will repaint the markings and stars.

Once the tank is done, I will be getting her running !!!!
I was missing the glass and gaskets for the windshield but I found a jeep parts vendor that has the properly cut glass for this jeep, and I have it here now. About $200 with free shipping. I also have new gaskets as well so that will be fun getting it restored.

Then I will install my new weebee canvas top.

I work a little on this jeep, and my 43 Ford Gpw restoration, and my 42 Ford gpw, and I also just got a 43 Dodge Command Car. So I am well stocked up with projects 😁😁😁

I hope to get the tank and windshield done in the next 2 weeks and post all progress here as I get things done.

Best Regards,
Ray

If there is no receptacle on rhe cowl, there is no need for 24v stencil. The receptacle is part of the cold starting kit.
Rare is the M-38A1 shovel that doe not rattle. Shovels normally stayed in the supply room.

My Sept 1952 M38A1 does have the original receptacle on the cowl.
I have seen 24 Volt stencils just below that slave receptacle on a some early M38A1s.
Is that the correct location for it?

Hello,

My 53 jeep does not have the receptacle installed , so that would explain why I have no 24 V stencils.

I wonder what the receptacle powered ?

I did have a radio mounted in my jeep when it was in service with our wonderful Army.

I do need to figure out what radio to get that once was here.

I am so looking forward to getting this jeep started again for the first time in many, many moons !!!

It will be so nice to hear it run, and run free again 😁😁

PS- thank you Joe for your service to America in the U.S. Army !!!

Hello,

I did source a new radiator cap, air cleaner hoses, and new NOS 24 Volt battery cables for Flash 😁 to replace those ugly red wires.
I hope to have her running soon !
Will add more JB weld to the gas tank tomorrow, as its restoration continues .
You can also see I got 2 new upper battery brackets from Midwest Military, they make awesome high quality parts !!! ( hanging from the rafter after primer and paint)
Resized_20210516_220839.jpeg
Resized_20210516_221313.jpeg
A note on the shovel, I pulled it downward to clip it into the bracket for a very tight fit into the original bracket. It should ride smooth and quietly 😄 hopefully !!!

Here are some pics of the bountiful NOS parts that I got for her.
An NOS seat spring and base pan, nos " horse hair " like upper seat cushion padding,
an nos hose for the air cleaner, and an nos short rubber hose over to the carb. The original rubber is b 100 percent perfect, and n8ce and pliable !!
Look at the date on the hose, 1962,
like it was made yesterday !!!
I don't think even a new hose would come close to its original quality.

These are classic parts and I'm surprised that they are still of good quality.
