New M38

Post by devilnutz » Fri Sep 28, 2018 5:27 am

Recently picked up an '51 M38 SN MC-11803. It is running, well it was until we started tear down, and virtually no rust. I've always wanted a flat fender and pretty excited about this project. I'll probably be asking a lot of questions.

I purchased from a private party, not sure of the history before he acquired it about a year ago. The title states it came from Texas. I have found red paint on the rear diff under the OD, not red oxide primer maybe it was FD. Under the ugly green is a blue/gray paint then under that is a match to WW2 AJP.

Threrwas a NATO gray that was tried out around 1959 into the early 60's I remember 86th Engineer tactical vehicles at Ft Dix were painted NATO gray. New W.O.F M-201 Jeeps were factory NATO Gray during that same time period.

Original bucket screws were Phillips with an internal toothed lock washer. Looks like the mounting gaskets are gone.

It's closer to a 1950, than a '51.

Making progress. New piston rings, lapped valves, and replaced connecting rod bearings. Bearings were within tolerance but 2 had some deep scratches, figure pistons are out so why not. Rebuilt steering box and hope to get engine and transmission in soon.
