My new 1952 M38

Post by BATMOBILE1 » Fri Sep 01, 2023 10:57 pm

I’ve recently bought an M38 as a restoration project,it looks like someone had stripped it to start working on it and those parts didn’t end up being sold with it,so it’s missing a lot of the small items like footman loops and soft to brackets, soft top frame and rear seat..also the air cleaner, they had also taped over the gauges to respray it and the tape had been left on for so long it had eaten into the plastic ,also the emergency brake drum was missing, looks like it had come off at high speed as it dented the chassis and body..anyway here’s a few pictures of it before I started.

Below is where the emergency brake drum should be attached with the brake shoes..all missing and covered in oil.

. Below is the state of the speedometer gauge where the blue tape residue has eaten into the face,I’ve managed to clean it up quite well and doesn’t look quite as bad now.

Hi Ray,

Yes that’s the reason I bought it was the condition of the body, there’s some slight rust in the passenger under seat compartment and the under hood battery tray needs welding back in place but apart from that she’s mint.
Will post pictures as I go,I’ve already replaced the CJ fuel pump and rebuilt the carb, will look at the brakes next and look at re building the master cylinder.
And also bought the emergency brake drum and associated parts as they were all missing.something I wasn’t aware of when I bought it.
Once I’ve got her going and done the brakes I’ll take the body off and get it blasted.then ill be able to get to the chassis..

With patience and some elbow grease, a wad of this stuff should clean and polish the plastic face of your speedometer nicely.

Thanks for the info Ron,I used a very similar polish “BRASSO” worked well but still need some elbow grease on it,the tape must have been on it for a long time.
