TOW MUTT M825 at Car Show

Post by W. Winget » Wed May 22, 2019 9:51 am

After about 8 years of barn storage I brought her out for a work auto show.
Dead batteries, hole in radiator, dusty, but she cleaned up well enough.

Burlap covers on headlights to prevent reflection, the lights still shine through. Little old school Army trick.

No, the front piece of the AN/TAS-4 can be disposed of per local Radiological officer guidance. It is exceptionally rare, but I have actually had 4 in my possession over the years. 1st one came out of a box at DRMO and I pondered what the heck I would do without the rest of the system. What you see took about 25 years to gather, and is one that was actually inspected by Battle Creek Michigan folks sent TDY to check it out 2002. Stupid thing is you can obtain better thermals now for $200-1000 commercially.

Slow tube leak on tire, no cigarette lighter outlet to use an air pump, and hand pump I had in her was one missing the hose...doh! Will fill before driving home, no problems.

Good looking jeep's, did the burlap on the head lights come after the Vietnam era ? you said old school Army trick, I do remember seeing the jeeps with yellow head lights, I heard was started by the French. I haven't seen any of them in a while, you could sometimes buy them at Military vech. shows, I wish now that I had bought a few.
Thank's for the pic's.

Field treatment for 82nd ABN vehicles (some) it something that would catch on within a unit and allow for some easy vehicle recognition (our unit has headlights wrapped) (I was not in the 82d for the record) It's not a PS Mag trick, rather ensured your headlights didn't reflect sunlight, or broadcast too much light at night time, it was not a replacement for blackout drive operations but did help to reduce vehicle signatures during night movements.

80's is now also old school to some....

One other point, I was held up 30 minutes while the gate guards figured out I didn't have a weapon and the missile tubes were empty....no one passed them the list of vehicles that were scheduled to arrive, but I basically got into the wrong lane with a new guard, the other guard would have waved me through as they have seen me daily for years.

Thanks Ken. I seem to recall he sold his several years back. I would (almost) like to tear into her and restore the body and detail it, but then it would loose it's motorpool distressed condition which makes it endearing as a truly whipped/utilized piece of equipment. I'll have to figure out why it seems to only be running on three or so cylinders, re-address the radiator (hole puncture I soldered up) and and exhaust manifold leak, but then basically only do touchups to keep her like she is...a show queen. With one (safe) seat to ride in on the street it's not something I venture out in, especially when it usually involves a police report or FBI investigation if it's sighted out on the street. It's the times we live in. Maybe I can find time to finish off the carrier jeep to go behind her then have a nice modern rat patrol pair.
