Tour de France after WWII - the Jeep's

Post by YLG80 » Fri Jul 05, 2019 12:58 pm

Tomorrow the Tour de France 2019 will begin in Brussels.
This year, the organization of the TdF is celebrating the greatest cyclist competitor ever: Eddy Merckx.

But do you remember that our jeeps MB & GPW have been used after WWII, starting with the first post war edition in 1947, by journalists and the organization.
In 1947, 18 jeeps have been used to follow the competitors on the rough roads in the mountains.

In circa 1955 - 1956 the jeeps were abandoned because they were found too dangerous in the middle of the peloton  .
The jeeps were painted in white.

Hello Yves,

Beautiful pictures !!!!
Thanks for posting them !!

I wonder if any of those nicely done Tour jeeps are still around somewhere ?
The last jeep looks like it was " liberated " right from some cafe or bar when GI's left it unattended :D :D :D
It has the combat era mud flaps still on the front fenders.

I hope some French Jeep owners will drive there jeeps, Dodges, and CCKWs and park them along the route, so we can see them here in the USA !

The Tour de France is televised here in America every year as well. I do watch it.

Jeeps are wonderful, and have had such a cultural impact on those who can appreciate them !

I just got my 1942 GPW running again , on the 4th of July !
I last drove it in 2010, when I brought it home.

It was raining and storming all day long and into the night.
We had a nice indoor 4th of July party and BBQ at my friends house at the lake here in Florida.

Well I left the party and went home as the rain had turned to a light drizzle, around 9 pm at night,
with my young neighbor girl, who has taken a great interest in WW2 jeeps and history.
We said we had a surprise for every one......
We drove the jeep back to the party, on its first run, in the dark, with lightning, lighting up the sky in the distance.
It was AWESOME and we so greatly enjoyed it. I kept checking all the gas line connections, all was well.
The headlights still work nice.

We drove that jeep around, until 3 am :D :D :D
The brakes even started to work :D
I still have to replace them, but almost everything else is done, and it runs beautifully.

Best Regards,
Ray

Hello Ray,
Congratulations for your first "sortie" with your jeep.
You will never forget that first drive on July 4th.

Regarding the Jeep of the Tour de France, I believe that one restored jeep was shown a few years ago during the Tour de France.
Here you can find a few photos of that white jeep.

That's a nice jeep.
