Hi Folks, Have posted some photos a gpw I picked up in Hawaii. The PO took me for a drive it and it was a little rough but worked. I have stripped the vehicle, cleaned and primed the frame and engine, and have been servicing the axles. It is all going well although the inside of the steering box was messy. Thankfully the diffs were good. I am surprised by the number of script parts on the vehicle. It seems everything but the radiator and engine block are original. All up an enjoyable project. I hope to have a moving painted frame by the end of Feb (maybe early March). The tub is pretty good (has the usual rusty places) and I will leave that till the end when the underside is done. The photos are the start (disassembly). Will post others as we progress.

Aloha! Where in Hawaii do you live? My brother lives in Makakilo up from Kapolei on Oahu.

Your ‘43 GPW looks nice. I’m finishing up a full restoration on my March ‘43 GPW so if you need any advice on what factory correct parts yours should have don’t hesitate to ask. Our GPW’s should essentially be clones of one another. I’m also buying an April ‘43 GPW to add to my motor pool.

Could you post a photo of your nomenclature plate and a good photo of your frame serial number?

I’m looking forward to seeing the progress you make!

Thanks Mick, I live in Pearl City. I have attached a frame and plate photo. I hope they are clear enough. The vehicle was delivered 8/5/43 and is actually in pretty good condition considering it was on the Hamakua coast for a while. I am excited about the project and will try to get her driving ASAP. Thanks for the offer of your advice I appreciate it.

Hi Mick, is it Dallas? I have no idea. I see some discussion on origins and someone said the 4x4 stamp was Dallas. I have been trying to work out any history on the vehicle. I know it is not always sequential off the assembly line but Yves has a record for 1286111 with a hood number (20405882). I figure it may be the one before (20405881) but I dont know that for sure. It could have been removed to fix something before being accepted. I do wonder how it ended up in Hawaii and where it was attached. I have searched and checked the other photo databases but cant find anything yet.

Hope you are well.

Hi Fellas, have been working on the gpw and life is good. Have a few floorpan photos to show. Have removed the plates that were riveted to the floor and found a little rust. I have a guy lined up to grit-blast the tub and panels so I can start welding in the new material. All up not as bad as I thought it would be. Most of the obvious stuff was hidden under rivited plates. Hat channels are U/S. Still have the oak stiffeners there!

Have cleaned up the frame and axles and primed them but I am not that happy with the frame finish. I may get that grit blasted as well. The wire brush did not give the quality I would like. A shout out the RFJP (Scott and others). The folks there have provided great service in the parts department. Hawai`i is not the most easy place to manage cost effective logistics but things are going well and service is personal and fast.

Am enjoying this project and it has given me new focus. I have really enjoyed the historical research component of the build.

'Hope you are all well

Bits and Pieces

Post by manaola78 » Sat Mar 02, 2019 11:09 am

A few items getting cleaned up. The tub is at the sandblaster so we will see what is left when it gets back. Has a fair bit of rust in the front floor and the floor riser is half gone. Am trying to decide whether to make a new one, repair the old one, or buy a new one.
