Re: Jeep dame of the Day
Maybe the French were worried about their spare tires rolling away in the night.
Guy Standing wouldn't be the snipers target, any military might be.
When in Afghanistan we were told to hide under the mess tables if the rocket alarm went off (sometimes nightly) many, like me realized that was a futile gesture, the plastic table wouldn't stop anything nor prevent crushing from a ceiling, better to eat then move out. Funny to watch it unfold, and then the types that run to the door turning in their trays standing in a long line to dump the food before getting to a shelter.
Just suck it up and think like a Pilot encountering AA: "Big Sky Little Bullets"

Excellent
I doubt that the Germans at the time were different than Russians today regarding the civilians...

To JAB:
There were so many units in Paris in August. Many have already been surprised to see men kissing men of the 2nd French armored, who were instrumental in the celebrations surrounding the event. In this photo, you see a commonwealth soldier holding the lady. The jeep itself could have belonged to a signals unit, a press unit, or other. It may have belonged to any number of units not technically identified as "combat" units.

Good point. My main idea was that as rare as those locks were, even on the early jeeps they were supplied with, to see one in 1944 France surprised me.

Thanks to the background on that photo (Aux Fabriques françaises on the building), I have found that it was taken in Chartres on Aug 16 or 17, 1944
Additional information.
The first tank that entered during the night from 15 to 16 Aug in Chartres was stopped by a German anti-tank hit.
After the liberation, that damaged M5 Stuart tank was simply pushed into a hole in the road...and buried .
In June 2008, that U.S. tank of the 31st Tank was rediscovered during road works and exhumed...
Here is a picture of that tank while being pulled out of the ground:

Thank you for the picture and location clarification. Just goes to show further the interaction of armies, individuals and cities all over Europe during that time

Re: Jeep dame of the Day
I found this GPW, and it appears to be a rare prototype; it is a 43 GPW, with a Porsche carb and tub, and has a half Ford, half VW frame grafted together for a 81 inch wheelbase. Brilliant!.
I think this was a collaboration between Ford and VW to cut Willys out of the Golf Cart market.
It is for sale; should be restored and put in a museum.

I just wish MD Juan would crank out a GPW or Schiwimmwagen body kit that you could refit with basket case MB/GPW or upgrade with CJ, TJ, etc. modern parts for fun.

Re: Jeep dame of the Day
Back in the '90s, my wife worked with a woman whose husband restored those...and kubelwagons. He has one of each!
Pretty cool.
As far as a repro tub, could you use a old VW pan/engine to power it?
Seeing what restored Schiwimmwagen goes for, there might be some money in it.
