Hey, I gotta just say, you guys. I like the photos that are historical, not calendar pinups from Bubba's Garage and Bait Shop. Just my observation.

...those were the days. Somewhere in France, 18th September 1944 (a day the British Airborne had a difficult time at Arnhem!):

Nice jeeps. I see headlight guards, axe and shovel, early black Sheller steering wheels and no torque reaction spring, white overpainted registration numbers, windshield covers, and a soldier washing a rear wheel in addition to the ladies doing laundry the old way.

Strange hood number on the Jeep entering the yard...X - 2 ? 0 2 3 5
The Jeep getting a clean features a wire cutter!

...not sure about headlight guards Jeff, looks more like BOD lamps installed instead of headlight on driver side.

I'm fairly sure I can make out a Canadian (or was it British?) head light guard (or whatever it was called) on the one with the apparent X and even the one being washed. It's grainy, but the driver's light on both vehicles seems to have it and the passenger headlight seems to be removed on the X jeep.

no Jeff, it is not this Canadian guard. I also thought the X Jeep could have a Brit padigree...hmm?

I remember some info on x-prefixed hood numbers...but cannot find it right now.

Is that a cable reel bracket at the back of the Jeep getting the clean?

Thanks for enhancing Yves.

...M48 dash mount for 30 cal. Are there tubes for mortar ammo on the rear fender?

...were not X hood numbers for vehicles "taken prisoner" from the enemy? So that could be a British Jeep (without U.S.A. number) captured by the Germans and then re-captured by the US Forces!

But then the dash mount would have been added after it was back in US hands.

That photo is for sale on Walmart.com... but not to Europeans  !
Except if you use a VPN connection to fool the website

For sale?
I downloaded it from a public domain archive years ago.
Was dated 9-18-44.

...that GI does look focused, however, not on anything in the engine bay! :D
