Steering Wheel

Post by Mbeirao » Fri Mar 09, 2018 3:14 am

I have a Willys MB253994 with delivery date July 1943.
What is the correct steering wheel?

Green Sheller Steering Wheel or Green Metal Spoke Steering Wheel

I've heard that the model (Green Metal Spoke Steering Wheel)
is original only from GPW, and Green Sheller Steering Wheel just for Willys.

Is this myth or truth?

I believe the Sheller plastic steering wheel was used in 42' only. Not sure exactly when the switch over happened, but yours would be the spoked wheel. Definitely a myth that GPWs only had spoked wheels and Willys had Shellers

I was reminded at a show that only the Navy got the metal spoked Jeep Steering Wheel. One will endure WWII Jeep myths for as long as two human beings get together and talk "Jeep".

"Ben", so right. Owning, driving and showing my Jeep for 30 years has taught me: Smile and nod politely; Say 'um, hmmm' alot; Say 'Isn't that interesting, yes, I have/have not heard that, Thank you'. Among too many others we all know. It always tickles me when someone tells me all about my Jeep. But I do listen. Always, as I can always learn more. Love this hobby and history. It's kept me from collecting Locomotives. One of my favorite questions asked of me when when parked out in public:
"Does it run?" I'm tempted to reference the Flintstones but I don't. Usually.

Years ago, I had the engine out of my M38 for some valve work. Our club was having it's largest show of the year and I decided to take the jeep on the trailer anyway without the engine. I must have had 50 people ask me if I knew my engine was missing. I finally started telling them, "So THAT'S what the loud noise was on the way here!"

Nice to know, but the BS factor is still out there and it is impossible to round them up all in one place-or is it?
