Dip Stick Found inside block!
Word to the wise! We purchased an early CJ2A engine. Before we bought it the seller started it and ran it for us for 5 minutes or so. The engine looks great. It's clean and really purrs. After getting it home we drained the oil and coolant so we could put new gaskets and a paint job on it. We had the motor turned upside down on the engine stand while my husband removed the oil pan. At first we were again happy to see how clean the engine looked but then I noticed something odd inside the block. I pointed it out to my husband and he said it was gasket material that had fallen in when he removed the cover. I reached in to take out the "gasket" material and realized it was something much harder than gasket material. After fishing out all the pieces we came to the realization it is an old dipstick that had fallen into the motor. It is all chewed up but thankfully the pieces are rather large and seem to have stayed on the bottom of the pan. Wish us luck as we now have to disassemble the engine to check for damage! Thought you guys would like to see a picture and appreciate the warning. Just because you hear a motor run and inspect it thoroughly before buying it, always check the oil pan.

Do not be surprised if you do not find any damage.

I remember a large Cat engine we were tearing down for a rebuild at the dealership where I worked. The mechanics found several wrenches and a flash light in the oil pan. The name on the flash light was one of our mechanics who had rebuilt the engine several years before!

Was the mechanic walking around asking everybody if they had seen his flashlight? Did he want it back after the oil bath?Chuck W. wrote: The name on the flash light was one of our mechanics who had rebuilt the engine several years before!
