That aircraft 41-35867 Martin B-26C-40-MO Marauder was likely from the 440th Bombardment Squadron.

Found that information on an accident report web site.

Ahhhhhhhhhh... Roundel. Far more Accustomed to seeing them on aircraft.
More so than a star, Roundel seems like an inviting target for enemy fire.
