Neat little story of that jeep's post war lift. Most of us don't have a clue where our jeeps came from and how they spent their time outside of the military. Mine, for example, was purchased by a guy in Virginia and flipped to me within a matter of months. He unfortunately didn't try to get details about the jeep before he bought it, so I'm only left wondering what kind of life it lived

Yes, but I'm wondering why the British army was already selling the wartime jeeps in 1946?
What did they use?
The Austin Champs and the Land Rover were not available before the beginning of the 50's.
Or were they sold by the US Army?

Yves, just going forward to the 60s, the British Army ordered a load of Mini Mokes for use within their forces. Unfortunately they soon realised the ground clearance was too small, so they rejected them. Some were sent to Australia, and some to Cyprus, but they werent used by the military in those countries either. There is still a few here in England,, but they do ask serious money for a good one. A nice vehicle on a summers day though.

After the war ended, the Allied armies went back to a much smaller format and did sell off a large number of surplus stock including jeeps.
In the British forces, the newest and best examples were kept in sufficient numbers for the peacetime army and used until the late 1950s, until lack of spares put them out of use.
Already in 1945 did the British occupation army in Germany transfer a large number of jeeps and (airborne-)trailers to the Norwegian army. That is why British Airborne jeeps and trailers are frequently found in that country.

Klaas, i was led to believe the Norwegians had an underground storage facility with over 4000 jeeps down there in readiness for the Cold War. Have you heard anything similar to this ??? And the Norwegians really looked after their jeeps.

Hi Mark,
I have not heard that story before, but it would not surprise me if, at least partly, it is true. Would be worth following up :o
Sounds a bit like the "jeep still in the crate" story, but I know that over here about a decade or so ago someone found an underground cache of rifles and ammunition which was hidden by the government in case they had to provide weapons for a resistance army when the Russians came. Denied at first but admitted later on.
My first jeep (in the late 70's) came from the Norwegian army.

It looks like that the USA has requested Norway to reuse these caves to store tanks and humvee's.
http://www.bldgblog.com/2014/08/militar ... logistics/
They are doing the same in Switzerland.
Many tanks are stored underground along the road North of the Thunersee lake.(Interlaken)
When you drive on the road along the lake, you can see the huge steel doors in the mountain :) !

The Jeep dame of the day, is Captain Ruth Kinzeler, nurse of the 4th General Hospital

Ruth Kinzeler and other Nurses of the 4th enjoy a ride in a “liberated” US Marine Corps 1/4-ton Truck.

Captain Ruth Kinzeler diary is published here :https://www.med-dept.com/veterans-testi ... -kinzeler/
At the end of her diary :
Ruth was honorably discharged from the United States Army in September 1945. After leaving the service, she attended “Case Western Reserve University” and graduated from the “Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing” in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

In the early 1950s, Ruth accepted the position of Chief Nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
One night, while dining alone at a restaurant, she noticed a gentleman at another table who looked familiar to her; he too was dining alone.
He approached her table and asked if she was Captain Kinzeler of the 4th General Hospital.
He introduced himself as Corporal George Solot, who had trained and served under her command in Australia and New Guinea.
They were married on 26 April 1952.

In Hawaii they went to a priority list that included veterans, state and federal orgs, non-profits, and then the public. A great paper by Gwen Sinclair called Jeeps, Communists, and Quonset Huts: World War II Surplus Disposal in the Territory of Hawaiʻi speaks to the process here. You can find it online by searching the name. It talks about how the coffee industry was changed by the surplus jeeps in kona.
