BOLTS

Post by JMZ421 » Mon Mar 22, 2021 3:38 pm

WTB some ORIGINAL M38 upper floor pan bolts. Due to shipping and cost, I would take like 10 or so even though I only need a couple. Much appreciated, John

How many do you actually need? I'd be happy to put a couple in an envelope and send them for free.

Best ask for 673600, I used order these in packs of 100 from Jeep back in the good old days. they have the correct washer and length is 5/8".If you check your SNL's. You will also find these on 50's CJ-5.

Dave, yes they are the bolts as you and Joel stated. They have washer attached and the cupped head used on the upper floor board I had to remove to rebuild my steering box. I only need 2 so that I have all the original. Sounds crazy but trying to keep as original as possible.

I will send you some stamps back to cover the cost. Very much appreciated, John

From a WWW search:

"SEMS are a bolt combination with a permanently attached washer or set of washers. It is also referred to as captivated washers, screw/bolt-washer assemblies or combi-bolts.

The word SEMS originates from The Illinois Tool Works Inc., who made machines that produced pre-asSEMbled washers and screws.

In spite of the original patents and trademarks, the word SEMS is generally recognized as a generic term applicable to screw and washer assemblies. The washers are installed on the bolt blank before thread rolling. Since the outer diameter of the threads becomes larger than the inner diameter of the washers, the washers are prevented from coming loose from the bolt. It is normally possible for the washer/washers to slide on the non-threaded part of the bolt."

I can't dig them out but I have the drawing for the 673600 bolt, Sems is correct. These are plastered all over the dash and floor of 50's vintage CJ 3B thru CJ-5 and M-38 thru M-38A1. I made it an effort to purchase quantities of Willys and JEEP part numbered bolts and screws used to assemble various sheetmetal items used on these Jeeps. These bolts are not "run of the mil" Tru-Value/ACE Hardware bolts and screws.

Thanks Joel. I have the correct Willys bolts for John. I spent a few years collecting bolts for my M38 rebuild. I'm nearing the end and have a bunch extra. The bolts are wire-wheeled, primed, and painted late 50's OD. Not factory correct by John can deal with that. The rest of my extra bolts are going to a friend who is building an M38A1.

Jeeps are fun, and their owners are great.

Only bolts that look right are the originals.
