M38 Toolbox- Found!

Post by Rick E. » Tue Apr 02, 2019 7:17 am

I know they are nearly impossible to find and no one makes a quality/correct repop, none-the-less, I need one. If only the top part, that is fine since you can buy replacement panels for the front and sides. Thanks!

I am still looking in earnest. I am in the process of tub restoration and I'm seeking an original tool box.

Get a CJ one; weld on the Decon bottle tabs, and use an M38 Lid lock.

M-38 Box is different than CJ3-A due to upper Pioneer Tool recess.

I made a CJ3A one fit my M38; it is only on the edge that needs tweaking and that is easily fixed to fit on an M38.

So that leads to another question: is there a descent repop out there? All I have heard of is junk.

I have not seen a repro one; but do note that the same box is sold for the CJ and the M38. There is no issue fitting a CJ one to the wall of an M38.
Also note that the M38 will have the little turning bar type of catch but that is easy too.

I just looked them up, my M-38 amd M-38A1 Parts manuals have them noted from when I bought some 50 years ago.
I used to buy M-38 Box thru Willys thru mid 70's
M-38A1 Box thru 1970 from Willys and Hy Berg thru 1970
CJ-3A from Willys and Hy Berg.

Each of the above was cut different at the body side.
All cost under $10.00 back then.

The one I took out was a repop, I believe for an M38A1, since it has a built in dip on the front passanger side. Very thin and sat way too far forward. My passenger seat would not interface with the fender bracket in the rear.

Does a company out there make a good one? MD Juan has warts. Omix Ada same I believe.
