I tried a PM but could not get it out of the outbox for some reason. I do have an extra MCZ 4001 UT which the parts book shows use after 74419. AL MBP4301 UT up to 74419, so I assume they might be interchangeable. You can PM me if you think it might work. Thanks

They are NOT interchangeable. There is a bunch of parts that changed when they changed the starter, like the bellhousing, the ring gear and others. You likely need the early starter, MBP-4301UT. You may be better off getting your old one overhauled if you have one.

What is the serial number of your Jeep? That should indicate early or late. If you get your old one rebuilt and you have a competent/honest shop then there is a military manual that outlines the rebuild process.

Early M-38 Starter is mounted wirg 2 Ea. 3/8" Bolts and requires a 124 Tooth Ring Gear, late M-38 Starter is same as M-38A1 mounts with a 1/2" Nut on the front and has a long 1/2" Bolt that goes thru the Bell housing. Late requires a 129 Tooth Ring Gear.

Thanks. Good to know. My 3/52 had been converted to 12v but all of the 24v stuff came with it.

I need the early one. I wish I had a 24 volt unit to overhaul but unfortunately it sports a 12 volt non-mil version.
