Genset Onan and ford

Post by Adam » Mon May 10, 2021 4:30 pm

Just picked this up, craigs list I think, 8NC ford 4 cyl flathead, No clue what the C means. USAF 1959 trailer. Big long suicide cable on her. Not sure what the future holds for this. I have no use for that monster trailer, Converto mfg. engine may fit the 8n neighbor has, will c if it runs. Has a fuel pump on it that is not being used, front single post mount, unlike the earlier pe95abc mounts. maybe somebody pulled this from a truck and put it in the genset. or who knows, never saw one before.

Some info on the 8n engine,, for what it matters. info here on the 9N engine, these can be faked into looking like GP engines, some pics of engines here that do not have fuel pump hole cut out or threaded.

this 8nc engine, has a fuel pump on it, updraft carb, fuel pump installed and was not used connected, carb hooked right to fuel tank, maybe engine came out of a truck or something.

GPW engines have stars on their serial numbers, wonder if it was a carry over from earlier stuff, so what do the stars mean on gpw engines.

The engine block cylinder bores were enlarged and the sleeves were changed at serial number 433578 to a cast iron material with a .090" wall thickness (piston size remained the same). The "8N-B" casting mark on the left rear of the block was then changed to "8N-C" and the star on each end of the serial number was changed to a diamond. Because Ford stopped supplying the steel sleeves, many older engines were rebored at overhaul time to use the new cast iron sleeves. The engine oil pan casting was beefed up to give it extra support to resist cracking from the strain of front loaders.

I am going to compare this engine, to a GP engine, and a flathead engine from a PE95A genset. Then put the 8N engine into a gp while its original engine is rebuilt.
