I am making progress getting the compressor and fuel tank removed. Now I can tackle the engine and get the metal parts blasted for painting. Then I will work on the engine. The pistons in the compressor section are in great shape.

This has been consuming most of my free time lately. My youngest son and I have been restoring a Cavalier C-51 coke machine. It has a modern compressor and cooling system with R-134 and has been completely restored and painted in our shop. I think it will look a bit nostalgic in a WW2 motor pool, allbeit a few years too young, (1951 vs 1945) Time to fill it with 8oz glass coke bottles from Krogers.

It's a great deal as you get one coke that costs $0.93 for only a dime

I am continuing the work on the tear down to get all of the metal ready for the sand blasters. Almost ready to take a load over.

I was hoping to compare notes with others. Are any more of these in collections? I have looked and only saw one other on CL in Nevada a few years ago.

Unfortunately for the likes of us, the rarest things often haven no, or few others to compare to. There's a guy in the 1/2 ton + trailer section right now with a 1940 3/4 ton. So any of the knowns with a Jeep trailer or with a Ben Hur don't necessarily apply. This that you are working on is even more rare and unusual.

Matt,

It sounds like you have run the same route with some of your early year G518 trailers. Nice work on your website by the way. I suppose I will be treading on unknown territory here and should document my work more closely, rather than stripping and repainting eveything OD and calling it good.

Your comments give me pause to do a better job in that area. I did find for example that the Ingersoll Rand parts were mostly primed with a flatish black, then painted OD. Some parts were primed over black in red oxide, then OD. I'll try and post most of my findings on my site as you have done.

Thanks again...

I have made a bit of progress of late. The metal parts came back from the blaster. I primed and began painting the variuos pieces that go to the frame and engine support/shroud. I also finished the tool kit, complete with repro TM. The tires are ready to mount as soon as I get them rims painted.

I found some nice embossing on the tow bar tube. It says YOUNGSTOWN, nothing else I could find. I must assume the tube drawbar was made under contract by Youngstown Sheet Metal and Tube (YSMT) company. The TM lists the draw bar as an Ingersoll Rand (IR) part number, so we might conclude IR purchased raw tube from YSMT and made the drawbars at IR. I could be wrong though, but I cannot find much about their history wrt the compressor.

With the exception of a bit of cleaning and mounting the tool box which I will do after engine assembly, The chassis is now finished. The tires actually turned out decent.

To focus on something different I spent a bit of time working on one of the many dat aplates on the compressor. This particular one is for the operation of the Ingersoll-Rand Compressor. It was in pretty bas shape, being hard to read and rusty. After cleaning, but not removing all of the patina, I painted it with flat black, then painstakingly scraped the front leter by letter. The relief of the letters is so shallow that sand paper did not work even with a small block. The plate was also bent and I had to remove several large dents. I did not want to damage the printing with hammering. Some of the letters have dark patina, so it makes it hard to read each letter after cleaning. I put a final coat of clear satin after a bit of touch up.

This is my first data plate clean up. I wouldn't call it a restoration and I have much to learn about the process. I tried a few different techniques, but the shallow lettering made it difficult. I also did not want the pristine new plate look, rather some patina to underpin the age of the machine.

Of interest, the TM lists the 1st compressor made for the Army as Ser. No. 102. This one is 121 making it the 19th compressor made for the Army.

Finished the second data plate. This one has nice high letters so it was much easier to clean up and paint. Its a bit shiny as the clear is drying. Of note, there is no Registration Number assigned on the data plate.
