Re: PU 58 from MA
Finally most of ice on driveway is gone and can get to this unit. No matter how original and untouched, there is always issues.
I new it had no battery and had an electric fuel pump, also had a clogging issue with fuel tank outlet. 70 years of dirt and rust in the tank will do that, that needs to come off and get flushed, will need a new fuel pump and fuel lines, strainer is leaking. I don't like rubber lines over hot manifolds, makes for a nice backyard fire.

Original rubber hoses did not like the road trip home. at least coolant did not freeze.

Battery carrier and cables, will all need work.
Exhaust needs replacing, muffler did not like the ride either.
Air filter will need cleaning out and a new air hose

Tomorrow we will crank it over, was also told charging system wasnt working, will inspect that too. Right now, I cant crank it by hand, wonder what happened, maybe some water got in there and froze, or the starter is stuck, or, well who knows. we will c.

Gonna pull the stator off as she is stuck solid.
took radiator off as it was missing the guard, aslo the bolts holding it in were missing, wonder what went on there, Obviously not the clean the back of it. That pusher fan forces all the leaking oil right onto the core.
Generator on engine is a 12Y, regulator has been fiddeled with, its a 10Y and seal is missing.

Stator is off, mice or squirrels or some varmit filled it up with nuts and his nest, its frozen solid.
all needs to get cleaned out, needs some air circulation and will most likely smell like mouse p when its gets hot.

From a distance you can see the 6 poles in the stator and might be able to make out the 6 outer coils on the rotor. 6 pole unit = 1200 rpm's somebody has a rotor and stator for sale on here, says from a pe95, pe95 is a 4 pole unit, not interchangable. 500 some odd pounds of generator section here, watch your fingers, I will use the overhead hoist to reassemble this, rotor needs to go on first, then the sir shielding, then the stator,

Re: PU 58 from MA
I've often wondered if all that weight of the rotor/exciter assembly end loaded onto the engine flywheel will cause premature wear on the crankshaft bearings. BTW, I think the red unit came from a town near me here in Gettysburg, I was going to take a look at it but was kind of relieved when it was sold, I didn't need another PU-58. I'm glad you guys bought these units, it's good to know there's someone keeping them going.
