New Family Addition PE95-G

Post by Adam » Wed Feb 27, 2019 8:12 am

Picked this up yesterday in New Jersey. Was hoping to find an unmolested unit to make a trade with. Not going to happen with this unit though. This is as found, haven't touched her yet. Has a nice brown cap and rotor to go on the shelf though. Decent oil filter and original maybe first generation ignition suppression parts.

Engine serial number along with generator number on the oval tag. Looks like an out of sequence serial number.

"runs great" favorite PO quote. This one did run. Didnt have to get a battery out of the truck and the furl tank off the lawnmower either. Was told the battery wouldn"t hold a charge and genset wasn't run much along with manual and auto start switch was bad. As it sat, the price was good, engine is worth more than the asking price.

So lets see what is right and wrong with this unit.

Anyway, battery was dead as can be the next morn. Cranked right over with a good battery at 15*F. It didn't like accelerating, you can see the heat shield in the picture is in the tool tray so he probably had problems with the carb. carb was full of dirt and acc. pump was broken. repaired that mess and it starts right up. Stop start switch was jammed so had to put the hand and suto start switch in auto to shut her down. freed up stop start switch and now will run in auto and hand. Small switch still bad though.

Governor mount was rewelded and some bracket added to it in addition to the gov pulley is loose. Will replace that mess tomorrow. There is a fancy throttle control on her, will hold steady rpm's but no provision to automatically accelerate under load.

While I am in that area, radiator is fake and all the guards are missing. I might have all that stuff here someplace from a rust bucket genset I got last year.

Fuel tank is not original, looks professional made, from light steel, not 1/8" diamond plate like some of these I have found. wonder how much shrapnel will come off a welded homemade tank if it went off. First off its too high, front panel door wont open fully and tool tray slides were cut off to clear the fuel tank along with home made fuel tank mounts. No big deal, but kneeling down and peeking under the panel wont last long.

Support rods or tray supports are missing along with battery hold downs and bolts.

Changed out the governor today, had the same one. Didnt plumb it in. Plugged the bottom and put some oil in it and capped it off. Figure if a cj can run like that maybe this one can too, Will drill a vent hole in the cap later.
Carb base had the stud broken off for the gov rod, so replaced the carb base, put the heat shield back in, gaskets under velosity governor were broken. Used 3 gaskets on this setup, book only shows 2, guess they want the heat shield to be metal on metal, oh well it got a gasket anyway.
compression is 95 60 95 95 so something is wrong with #2. Will fill that cyl up with PB blaster an let it sit for a month. Will check the tappet adjustments too, maybe the valve is a tad too snug. yea right. we will see. there was tons of carbon and oil in the intake manifold, PO said he used a mix of atf and fuel stabul in the gas so maybe the rings are carboned up.

Need to change the radiator out. The overflow on the rad is hammered shut so when she gets hot the long rad hose balloons and when it cools down it sucks flat.

Fun fun fun, snow storm tonight and tomorrow so may need her for power. Electric and phone wires are still down from last weeks storm. Lots of red ribbons holding wires up in the trees. You would think they were Christmas bows.
