ray it has been fun. I am working on the compressor side now and there are absolutely no 6-cylinder ingresoll rand parts avaialable that I can find. I am looking forward to making the gaskets. I kept pieces of each for thickness. I am happy that the wear on the cylinders and pistons is slight. Putting those 6 rods and pistons together was a bugger bear. I am not sure if my installation order is correct as the TM is light on rebuilding the compressor side. Its pretty much Install cylinders etc, with no mention of order. It seems simple at first glance, but the connecting rods are joined together by three on each side to two halves of a part that wraps around the crank shaft, so you have to get your fingers between the crank case, the crank and the piston rods to get the bolts, nuts and cotters in. I'm working through that now as a dry fit. I'm on the 3rd itteration of install connecting rods and pistons.

It looks like IR did not make many of the radial compressors after 45, as I don't see a civillian cross over. Lucky I have one in good condition or it would be a static display. WOuld love to get it running for demo. Time will tell.

Wow,

That sounds like intricate work right there !!

I wonder if IR has any parts still in a long forgotten warehouse anywhere ?

We have a 5KW Onan Generator made for the US Navy, with a Sea Bees logo on it,mounted in a trailer, built in the late 1960's I think.

We needed a part and called Onan, and believe it or not they found that part, and were surprised themselves, and said it was the very last part for that generator, they had in their inventory, anywhere :D .

So maybe give them a call at Ingersoll Rand :D .

Keep up your great works !

Best Regards,
Ray

Ray that's a great idea. I should call them to do some parts research. So far I have been lucky. I found an NOS pancake muffler and the knuckle valve. All the engine parts are easy to find. Can't wait to start it up.

Hi Oz, no, not getting the engine. Mike mentioned it but don't think I need it.

Small details... ha! That looks like a major sub-project to get from that photocopy of a photograph to the bottom picture. There's a bunch of steps there you didn't share.

Matt,
It was a few steps. The TM image does not show the details of the Patent Numbers on the decal near the top. I was able to find a few real numbers on the patent lookup, but most are made up. I used Adobe Illustrator to make an image of the diagram and add the lettering in a general representation of what the TM shows. I don't have any indications of color and there is no TM photo of the sticker so I had to guess.

I printed the image on watertransfer printing paper and then sealed the top with clear matt spray, two coats.

I covered the back of the decal with blue painters tape. I then cut out the decal near the edge and peeled off the painters tape. I used the tape as a mask for the decal on the canister and overfpainted it in primer and then OD. When the tape is peeled off the gold color of the canister was left.

I wet the decal per instructions and transferred it onto the masked part of the canister.

I really should have painted the canister flat white, then put on the mask, then primer/OD. That would have left the white color behind the decal and not the gold color.

The printing on the decal is very light and whatever is behind it will show through. I suspect if I had a better ink jet printer that would not be the case.

It was a fun project. I am going to do something similar to make new gauge faces, except I will use decal printing material, not water transfer type.

The air clenaer assembly is like any other vintage engine oil bath air cleaner. I cleaned it by hand to avoid getting any sand in the element. The original cleaner was painted satin black and then received a coat of OD. THere is according to the TM a United Oil Bath Air Cleaner decal affixed to the housing. The decals are found on ebay.
