Willys MB OCD Fire Pump

Post by CarstenA » Sun Nov 15, 2020 6:09 am

Hey there,
this pretty cool Willys Fire pump made its way to our place.

Serial# S9407

I am wondering if there are other pumps around?

Unfortunately the side panels and the exhaust are missing but luckly (thanks again Fred) I have been able to find a mint condition manual. That even covers the serial number. An other cool thing is that the original hand crank is still present.

Espically the fact that most of the parts are "Jeep" part is facinating.
The gauges, the switch, etc.

The carb is not for an MA. :D
The engine seems to be in the slat grill style.

Enjoy
Carsten

I've been looking for one of these for a while, engine is cooled by pump water and some storage in the two big round pontoons I think.

Hey Adam,

I didn't figure out all the functions yet.

The two big pontoons seems to be one big U shaped one. It is equipped with a fuel gauge indicator as the Jeeps. Which make me think that this is the fuel tank. That design is pretty neat.

Picture one is showing the "radiator" I think. It is connected to the waterpump.
If the pump water is used to cool the cooling circuit is to be checked. Would be another cool feature.

I would love to see a complete one. That would help to complete the pretty awesome steamline design.

Adam, have you ever seen another one?

Regards
Carsten

I saw a few on the auction site, they did not have radiators though. However I never did see an owners manual

Carsten,

Absolutely fascinating piece of kit there. May I share the photos on the Civil Defense collectors group on Facebook? https://www.facebook.com/groups/1606850359580542

There are members there that would love to see this. And some that might be able to help out with some information.

Adam,

you are totally right about the connection between the cooling circuit of the engine and the pumping circuit.
Please see the pictures. With "radiator" i mean the water container in the front that is connected to the engine as the Jeep radiator is.
Do you know if it contains a heat exchanger? Could not imagine that the engine was used without antifreeze.

Matt,
of course. Go ahead. If they like to see more pictures please feel free to contact me directly.

The rebuild will take some time due to other priorities but if there is someone who e.g. could copy the dimension of the side panels or the exhaust that would be a blast.

Next step on that project is to strip the post war plumpers equipment. Unfortunatly they welded the pipes straight onto the original lid of the pump.

All the best
Carsten

Lots of interesting things about that engine,

The serial number is not in the standard area on the oval, and the dash is different. Pic in manual shows this too.
If you ever clean the paint off the oval pad post a pic of it. Just guessing, but how would they know that engine was going to be used in a pump, maybe serial number is in line but purposly put in a little different location on the pad?

Original spark plug wires and rain caps?
draft tube? maybe engine fan produced enough draft to clean out engine? Short draft tube on her. what is the casting date on the block, I dont see traces of willys or jeep on the head, so earlyish. Yet it has head studs, If you take the oil pan off, check the machining date, also are the rods and main bearings std.

Adam,

I think the complete engine is earlish.
The oilpan got the riveted drain plug.
The waterpump has the early casting number.

The casting dates will be checked later. Will keep you posted.
The serial number might not been identical to the dash because of the typical offset that comes with willys Jeeps and engines.
I could imagine that the OCD received more units than pumps.
Matt, do you know how many sets (generators, pumps, etc) have been delivered to the OCD?

Update:
The engine Number is
"MB OCD 236408"
The MB is not that easy to read as the OCD.
The casting date is
2-3
The oil pan removal will take several month.

Carsten:

Congratulations!! on finally getting the fire pump delivered to your home. That is one neat piece of Willys equipment! I am glad I could help you with that manual, as it went to the best home possible. I'll continue to follow your progress with great interest. :)

Best regards, and . . .

By dash, I meant the punched in mark on the oval pad, it is not in the same place as in the normal mb engines, nor is the serial number location on the pad. thats why i asked for a picture to compare with regular mb only engines/.

Adam,
please kindly see the picture attached. To my understanding its the location where all the GPW and MB engines got their serial #?

Matt,
the paint layers are green covered by red. Which colour did the OCD receive?

Carsten

Look at the location on the oval pad, if the engine was pulled off the assembly line, after serial numbers were stamped, you would not have room for the MB-OCD on top of serial number, Wonder if they pulled a whole group of engines off the line before the numbers were put on and before they were assembled with their external accessories. Shame there is only 1 out in the spotlight right now.

Carsten,

I asked on that forum. Got a lot of ooohs and ahhhs but no answers yet. One guy was tagged in a post as supposedly knowing about them, but he hasn't chimed in yet. I'll update as I learn more, if I learn more.
